To be clear they aren't 3D printing entire guns, just the "receiver" aka the frame, which is the part with the serial number that normally needs to be bought from a licensed dealer. These homemade guns still require the builder to purchase 99% of the gun in the form of actual gun parts.
It would be significantly easier to just buy a used Bridgeport mill, or even a dirt-cheap Harbor Freight benchtop mill n' drill rig, and make actual guns out of metal.The knowledge base, materials, and machines to do this have been out there for 100+ years and we don't exactly have some scourge of homemade guns terrorizing everybody.

Mr. Purple Cat Esq. - 2020-11-24 Yeah its also relatively easy to make bombs and all sorts of harmful shit, but generally only a tiny fraction of a percentage on the population do it.
Perhaps a properly crazy person usually doesnt have the werewithal to see such a project through, and criminal gangs can just illegally get normal industrially produced weapons.

Tell a dumb petty criminal they need to buy a lathe, stock and learn how to make a gun from nothing and you’ll end up convincing them to just buy a knife.

Cena_mark - 2020-11-25 I guess anyone can make a bomb, but it's extremely hard to make decent ones. Ted Kaczynski for example, made many bombs, but they were weak and often faulty.
I certainly agree ease of access is the problem with guns in America. You're not going to stop the most dedicated criminals, but most criminals will be dissuaded by inconvenience as gun violence is usually a spontaneous crime.

SolRo - 2020-11-25 There are actually several companies that 3D print things to order, though I imagine all of them won’t knowingly print guns.
