I come from three generations of paper mill workers (well two and a half, my dad got out in his 20s). My grandfather saw someone fall into a pulping vat. They had to send one of the workers who had been a medic in the war to get the parts out.

I once dated a girl who came from FOUR generations of paper mill workers. Her dad almost got out, but was sucked back in when her mother got pregnant. She told stories how he became paranoid of workplace safety conditions. What the machinery didn't grind up, the toxic fumes and chemicals poisoned. It got to the point he forbid prescription drugs in the house, even after she was diagnosed as paranoid schizophrenic. She ended up having an episode, slashing me up with a box cutter, killing my dog, burning our apartment building down, and crashing my car into the paper mill.

Yeah, my dad said that when he worked there people would have paper cuts all over their hands from moving rolls, and then the chemicals that got in the cuts would make them get big, wart-like bumps that would last for weeks.

I've always told people the best way to avoid dying of cancer is to never live in a paper mill town. That's like #1, the rest like sunscreen and stuff is a good idea too, but don't forget #1.

casualcollapse - 2021-03-09

What's with that quoted post?

casualcollapse - 2021-03-09

Yeah I have distinct appreciation for the sound editing/soundtrack, they punctuated several parts with interesting trills

I used to work for an engineering firm that designed & built both the steam systems and air systems for paper mills. I've been in many paper mills helping engineers take measurements.

They're all hot smelly Hells.

The only thing worse than the mill floor is the precipitator. That's basically a giant electrostatic filter the size of a building that they run all the exhaust through to weed out most of the nastiness before pumping the rest up the chimneys.

And since the stuff that comes out of the chimneys smells like boiled egg & cabbage beer farts, you can imagine how awful the stuff they take out smells.

We had to go into a precipitator that had been shut down & cleaned out because the guts had to be replaced and we had to take measurements for our sister company that designed pollution control systems. We wore respirators that pumped filtered air from outside and wore hazmat suits but still caught a whiff of the stank when we had to take all the PPE off.

my partner's pop was an accountant at a paper mill for decades. the worst stink of that place was his magically disappearing pension after however many mergers. but the mill also stinks up the air at their place pretty good, from a 30ish minutes drive's distance away.

Binro the Heretic - 2021-03-08

The hot fetid air rises then cools off so it drops like a smelly rug on people who think they should be too far away for the stink to reach.

We have the same problem here.
