Few serious anime nerds will defend this movie. Fuck 'em, it's great (and only like 45 minutes long since they leave out things like "story" and "coherence" in favor of "explosions" and "ridiculous superviolence." Fun!)

Seriously, I think if this were padded out to full feature length it would be terrible, but the producers got it absolutely right by condensing it into 45 minutes of WTF. The anime-nerds comment was referring to Dead Leaves' inexplicably poor reputation among, well, anime nerds.

The opening is one of the least intense and bizarre parts of the film. The ending is like Salvador Dali, Go Nagai, and the old Batman TV show colliding with each other and exploding.
