This was their first album that sucked, but I did see them on this tour (post Hetfield going up in flames) and they tore it up.

Frank Rizzo - 2007-07-21

yeah, post hetfield flame up was WAY after this album. Dummy.

dr_rock - 2007-07-21

You retard. This albums was great. On par or better with Puppets or Lightning, and way better than their early shit (Kill em All/No life till leather gayness). I bet you hate every album that comes out after you've discovered a band. That, or you're being a Burton fanboi (who is really overrated). In that case, at least say Garage Days Re-Revisited was their first sucky album.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2007-07-21

My lord this album sucked. I gave all my Metallica albums a listen a couple weeks ago and it's frightening how much the quality of their music dropped between Master of Puppets and this POS.

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-21

I see I am fighting a losing battle here (this was expected) but geez I didn't know you guys hated this album THAT much.

I pity the poor soul who eventually submits Unforgiven.

smoothbrain - 2007-07-22

I take it back, I thought this song was from the black album

smoothbrain - 2007-07-22

This is the only song on the album I don't really care for, but maybe it's because it got over played. The black album, on the other hand, was crap. I don't know about anything after that I pretty much stopped listening.

EvilHomer - 2007-07-21

5 stars for Metallica, but I never really liked Justice. And way after this album? Please, James was always flaming.

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-21

Allright settle down people.

I was at the Montreal concert where Hetfield got injured by that prop (the riot was insane: GNR came on and played for 20 minutes and they were like, 'seeya' and the whole crowd went nuts).

I would argue that Justice is their best album (after the godly MOP). There's just SO much to digest in each song; Hetfield really came into his own back then.

EvilHomer - 2007-07-21

Except, you know, the bass. It's hard to get into an album missing a quarter of the band!

I'd say it's maybe the fourth or fifth best Metallica album, on par with Kill Em All and maybe Load, but nowhere near MoP or RtL quality.

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-21

Oh Homer you vex me so.

Newstead was no Burton, but he did the job. To compare this album to the digital excrement that was Load should be a criminal offense though, so I'm going to have to call you out on that.

RTL was a great album, but it was a piece of fluff for them, basically. I still play it all the time, but it's over before you can blink an eye (For Whom The Bell Tolls is my favourite Metallica song after One).

We will agree to disagree on this, because there is no way in hell that I can persuade ANY died-in-the-wool metal fan to switch Metallica album preferrences; I would rather mow the lawn with my teeth as it would be more productive.

EvilHomer - 2007-07-21

Thanks! I love you too. But it's not that Newstead was a bad bassist (he was my favorite member after Cliff died) or that he didn't do his job (he did), it was that the rest of the band screwed him over and edited his work into oblivion. Remastered and live versions of the songs aren't too bad, but the original studio album was balls.

RTL was pretty short, and while it contains some of my favorite Metallica songs of all time (Bells, Fade, Ktulu), I'll agree it doesn't have the staying power of MoP. It's amazing for about fifteen minutes, and then the rest of the album just fades to black.

And yeah, I know, I'm a naughty boy. I'm deeply ashamed of my unironic appreciation for Load (not ReLoad), and will not defend my shockingly bad taste. All I'll say is: it's better than St Anger.

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-21

Homer, I am Madly In Anger with you (seriously I did a double-take when I heard him say that. I dug out the lyric sheet to make sure I wasn't hearing things).

EvilHomer - 2007-07-21

Shit, LJ time. Metallica does this, y'know?

The first time I ever heard St Anger I was driving down to band practice with a bunch of my friends. This song comes on the radio, and I start thinking to myself "Oh God, new Slipknot. WONderful." but, being the sarcastic bastard that I am, I turn around and shout "Hey guys! Check it out! It's the new Metallica song!" So I crank it up and pretend to get into it, and the whole time I'm thinking "Gee, this is worse than usual. In fact, it may be the worst Slipknot song I've ever heard. What the hell were they thinking?"

So then the vocals kick in, and I just start screaming bloody murder. I think that was the day my childhood officially died. RIP *sniff*

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-22

Dude, you've got me laughing for a week solid with that story. Thanks.

Jimmy Labatt - 2007-07-21

EDIT: *DYED-in-the wool

mr666 - 2007-07-21

No matter what you think of the album (I think it was alright, but it certainly didn't outright suck), this song still kicks ass.

ztc - 2007-07-21

Metallica are just like a piece of meat that keeps on living

JSP - 2007-07-27

Xiphias - 2007-07-29
