The song is about black people hanging from trees after rascist mobs.

theSnake - 2007-09-07

Holy Fucking FUCK. This is music. This is why I rank your emo and anime bullshit 1 star. Fuck your shallow bullshit and fuck you.

This is how you provoke actual FEELINGS. And its not like theres no suffering going on in the world right now. Artists today should feel ashamed.

baleen - 2007-09-07

Are you drunk?

theSnake - 2007-09-07

Yeah I was.

Cube - 2007-09-07

That's ok, I'm drunk too.

tamago - 2007-09-25

But what if I like both this and anime, but for entirely different reasons?

Hooker - 2007-09-07

Where's the 90s Video Week tag?

takewithfood - 2007-09-07

Apparently the first time Holliday performed the song live, before it was ever recorded, she was afraid she would be lynched herself. It turned out to be amazingly well-received, but what a bold, brave move at the time.

dead_cat - 2007-09-07

This is the most disturbing video I've seen on here. It isn't idiots beating each other up for shits and giggles. It isn't spoiled, stupid kids cutting ignorantly into their own bodies. It isn't videos of things blowing up in (seemingly) distant lands. It isn't the collected detritus of the era of entertainment and technology.
I feel like I should say something, something meaningful, but what is there left to say? She has said it all.

craptacular - 2007-09-07

five stars

SharoKham - 2007-09-07

I'd heard lots of other versions of this, but never the original. It's probably still the most haunting version, but the hardest about hearing it here was watching her face. That was intense. The way she cut off the ending instead of stretching it out like any other finale really makes it unforgettable.

This song was based on a poem written by schoolteacher who witnessed lynchings firsthand.

KnowFuture - 2007-09-07

Skeleton in our closet.

Elephant in our living room.

Diogenes - 2007-09-07

Devestating. Truely devestating.

Afgh - 2007-09-07

Neither of those are words.

ChocFullOfFunk - 2007-09-08

giggle

Stopheles - 2007-09-07

It really is a shame that she died so young (44) and so ignominiously (long addiction to hard drugs, 70 cents in the bank when she died). Wish there was an earlier recording of her performing this before her voice was blown.

Nevertheless, this deserves far more than five stars.

Miette - 2007-09-10

I have one from 1939 if you're interested.

Miette - 2007-09-10

or is this from that period...?

corneille - 2007-09-07

No one else should ever be allowed to sing this song. Gives me chills every time I hear it.

B. Weed - 2007-09-07

I'm just glad no one tried to put that song on this album.

B. Weed - 2007-09-07

Dumb me, tried to put a link in my comment. There's a "Billie Holiday: Remixed & Reimagined" album out, which just seems like kind of a bad idea (the local paper sure wasn't impressed with it).

athodyd - 2007-09-09

ironically I now realize who VSnares sampled for "Ongyilkos Vasárnap"

voodoo_pork - 2007-09-07

Amazing song. It's extremely sad that nowadays she wouldn't even get signed. Thank Christ we still have her music.

baleen - 2007-09-07

There are plenty of contemporary musicians with unorthodox voices and faces.
If you mean she wouldn't be on MTV, that's a different story.

KnowFuture - 2007-09-07

If she came along today she might have a crack at a contract for sounding like Amy Winehouse.

jangbones - 2007-09-07

Whoa.

Xiphias - 2007-09-07

I too am writing a long post about how great this song is despite never having heard of her until today ps linkin park sure does suck!

dead_cat - 2007-09-07

Oh hush. Just because some of us have never seen her singing it.

Camonk - 2007-09-09

Well Linkin Park does suck. 90s music week is a catastrophe. There, I said it.

tamago - 2007-09-30

I ask you, dear Xiphias, what difference does it make if if one already knew about this or if one just now discovered it? Sometimes the greatness of something is just readily apparent. And I think it's cool that something like this inspires people to be so verbose.

Grace Mugabe - 2009-01-12

Keep digging, you fags. 5 for Xiphias.

Albuquerque Halsey - 2007-09-07

"Strange Fruit" began as a poem about the lynching of two black men written by a Jewish schoolteacher from the Bronx Abel Meeropol, who used the pen name Lewis Allan (the names of his two children, who died in infancy). Meeropol and his wife were also the adoptive parents of the children of the executed spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg in the 1950s.

FeeFiFoFoTheFifeFifeBrown - 2007-09-07

Maybe the best clip on this site.

Hooper_X - 2007-09-08

Ayep. I can't believe you people haven't heard this before. For god's sake.

Camonk - 2007-09-09

Yeah this is a pretty good little song here.

NoCode - 2007-09-11

ARRGH, I went to a wacky progressive art/performance high school and we did a unit on slavery in America one year. The group I was in had to assemble a choir, arrange, and perform this song. It creeped me out back then, and apparently it still manages to creep me out.

But I must say, our arrangement was fucking badass. Don't fool around with art nerd kids. We got the skillz.

NoCode - 2007-09-11

Also the other day I called Borders and was put on hold. THIS SONG WAS THE HOLD MUSIC. WTF. This is not good hold music.

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2007-09-13

Borders: jack of all culture, master of none

tamago - 2007-09-25

Fuck anybody that rated this below five.

Cleaner82 - 2008-05-23

This is one of my favorite songs of all time, it's great to see it here. Dark, evil, and moody, with utterly horrible imagery... the way I likes em.

threads - 2008-06-27

Billie Holliday could make anyone cry.

kennydra - 2008-07-29

I absolutely love this song. Although I do like the recording I have better than this one, I like to see her singing here.

Also, what tamago said.

mr666 - 2008-08-27

Damn, that's what happen when you vote on clips drunk. You mean to click 5 and you decide to go for a 1 instead.

Billie_J_Buttfuck - 2008-09-06

Completely haunting. My fucking god.

Squeamish - 2012-09-06

Sept 6, 2012 -

I've been hearing this song everywhere recently. NPR talked about it on the radio, I've seen it in the local news, some kids in class were talking about it, someone was playing it as I was walking into my apartment...
