Ok, I meant this to be the entire thing, but I'm running into a "Auth Error3.x3a" error when I try to post more parts. Also, this version on is missing parts, and I really should have started with this instead: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCUJ-LLcE_0

its not symbolism if the stolen religious symbols have been stripped of their meaning. Like, if I made a show where buddha was a farting sumo wrestler from mars fighting lesbian vampires, that's not symbolism, that's just me trying to be artificially interesting.

EvilHomer - 2007-09-17

I disagree. I think a farting sumo-Buddha fighting lesbian vampires would be genuinely interesting. Please make this show!

Xenocide - 2007-09-17

Xiph, why haven't you sought funding for this project?

Aelric - 2007-09-17

i hate anime, yet i'm not an anime "hater". there are good examples of anime, such as metropolis and ghost in the shell, but those are oasis' in the desert of big titted, robot fighting, treasure hunting, status quo rangers with the power of mecha-shiva. i'll admit this had some pretty pictures, but whenever i see japan attempt to incorporate western religious symbolism, it always seems heavy handed, overkilled, and eventually monotonous. they do better with their own religions of Shinto and Buddhism, but even those are bastardized for the most part. there are exceptions, of course, but they are few and far between. they simply seem confused by our mythologies, and honestly, you can't blame them too much, as plenty of westerners are confused by their religions.

whew. oh, and i'm voting half because i liked the style, but would need to see more before i could make a proper judgment.

Adramelech - 2007-09-17

Dude, no. If you think Ghost in the Shell is a unique oasis, you're way off base. Most of the garbage you're talking about are shows aimed at adolescents and teenagers. Would you judge Western animation based on Street Sharks and Biker Mice From Mars? Hating anime is a stretch, because it's not a genre nor even a specific style. It's like saying I hate movies because there are a lot of bad ones.

Anyway, Angel's Egg is pretty boring. It has decent art direction, but it doesn't deserve the status of cult classic it has achieved.

Aelric - 2007-09-17

Ok, maybe i didn't state it properly. i hate most anime that i come across. i site things like ghost in the shell because i can still watch it and be entertained. it's certainly not comparable to great movies or anything, but it's basically like watching lost or 24, it's not super, but it'll kill an hour and you won't feel dumber for it. metropolis is a better example, along with a few others such as some (not all) miizaki movies and surprise productions like voices from a distant star. i didn't mean to suggest that i don't think it's a legitimate form of cinema, it's just saturated in mediocrity. so is western tv and movies, and all other countries cinema for that matter. that's what makes the few gems in any of it sparkle that much more. so yeah, when i say i hate anime, it's mainly because i've seen plenty, and i can usually predict it pretty well as a write off. i also don't bother watching tv save for a few shows i download, and i don't watch many hollywood productions (unless famously bad, because i like to mock them with my friends), preferring to stay in the foreign and cult film sections of the video store. but i'm not a hater, meaning, if you like it, then god bless you. i'm not here to tell you you're wrong, because your not. it's a matter of taste.

you bring up a good point about the age demographic, however.

uggg. shit, did i just get into a long comment debate on the internet about anime? damn, i lose. goddamn self awareness!

Cube - 2007-09-17

I heard there was a crucified Santa in a shopping mall in Japan one year on Christmas.

Aernaroth2 - 2007-09-17

dude, what the crap is wrong with robots fighting?

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2007-09-17

I'm just going to say that that while Angel's Egg wasn't quite the classic I desperately wanted it to be, I think that Mamoru Oshii can be given credit in one area - he actually studied the Bible and trained to become a priest.

So at least it's a bastardization in vein of The Holy Mountain or El Topo as opposed to Xenogears.

Also: paragraphs.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2007-09-17

Shit. I meant that in reply to Aelric.

Caminante Nocturno - 2007-09-17

Why do you fuckers always have to try and sound so intellectual when you bitch about how much you dislike anime?

Aelric - 2007-09-17

perhaps we talk like this about everything, hmmm? perhaps we simply have differing personalities and tastes due to different combinations of upbringing, genetics and personal experience. perhaps we are simply different people than you are, and guess what, that's ok, even if you don't think it is.

only point i was ever trying to drive home was a personal opinion on my own taste, not what i think the whole world should think. read my entire post instead of just the first three words and perhaps you'll not be so knee jerk reaction offended.

i repeat, if you like this, that is fine by me. i myself said that i would have to see more to make a proper judgment (see above). perhaps i would like it. perhaps i would hate it. i don't know yet. i was explaining my general position on anime. hell, i took an asain studies class that focused quite a bit on anime. i've seen plenty before i formed my opinion.

incidentally, i'll mention that grave of the fireflies is one of my favorite movies of all time. so yeah, i'm SOOOOO biased.

UCF: i used paragraphs!!!! did i do good!?!?! i love you!!

Cube: i always heard that was a rumor. i pray to jesus and his 12 holy reindeer that it is true.

Aelric - 2007-09-17

Cube: incidentely, i looked it up. sorry cube.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2007-09-17

Yes, paragraphs do make it less of a headache to appreciate your stupidity. Now work on your punctuation and maybe you'll get yelled at less.

Aelric - 2007-09-17

sigh, angry young men. moderates are the most hated of all people. i'm done here.

Xiphias - 2007-09-17

revdrew started it by claiming "heavy religious symbolism" when he could have said "this is a freaky cartoon"

revdrew - 2007-09-17

Will that work?

Meerkat - 2007-12-23

Here let me be non-intellectual and discuss Anime Dialog:

Wh-wh-WHOAAAAA!

A-A-AAAAHHHHHH!!

NO!

GUH-GUH-GAAAAAAAAAH!!!!

FEEL THE POWER OF MY THINGY!

WH-WH-WHOOOOAAAAAAA!

Y-Y-YOWWWWWWW!

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-01-20

See, Meerkat gets it.
