Also: a bonus on the DVD includes interviews with some of the weirdest nerds about the Cray super computer they used to animate the film. At one point someone figured out a way to use multiple light sources and the entire team went apeshit.
There is also a screen test for the original star wars with a group of X-wing fighters doing some barrel rolls. It looked good even by todays standards. Lucas eventually rejected it as too expensive and time consuming. The fucking prick.
No way. This movie was awesome. It was everything it was supposed to be, i.e., a post-Star Wars adolescent fantasy trip. Good enough that the plot is pretty firmly entrenched in people's minds, even if they don't remember the specifics... I know when it came out that the military was using video games to train people, there were some "Last Starfighter" cracks from the various news outlets.
I'm half surprised there hasn't been a remake or a "reimagining" yet.
