As a fencer, I can confidently say that I have never called it 'western martial arts'

Dear Nippophiles (whatever the fuck THAT means):

Western culture contributed EVERYTHING good to the world.

Modern fencing and (as far as I can tell) Kendo are sports, not martial arts. Both have artificial rules and the goal is scoring points (as opposed to learning how to actually duel and live to tell about it). That said I love fencing to death and agree with its description as physical chess. The closest you will get to real sword fighting in fencing is epee since there are fewer rules to restrict it. However it is a SPORT and there are things I do in it to score a point that I would never do if I were wielding a real blade in an actual duel.

It's pretty simple, kendo has no concept of a lunge, so there's no way a kendoka could possibly compete in a fencing match. Not that that's necessarily what's going on in this video or that we have any idea what this video is. +1 star for at least not wasting five minutes of my goddamn time.

er, keep in mind kendo is a sport derivative of an actual martial art and not an effective means of sword fencing per say (as in "I got to it this sucker before I die" type of scenario).

A more complete nippon sword technique does make use of "lunge". In katori shinto ryu, it's actually called a tsuki attack and you better believe that done right, it's a pain in the ass (or eye ball, depending on which way you're facing).

That said, for having done european (pre-epee medieval wielding that is) sword fencing and doing katori right now, I still dont know which would have the advantage in combat: the heavier europeans weapons and armors versus the surgical precision and speed of the lighter nippon stuff.

Later in history, though, I think the outcome is even less predictable between a foil and katana. But if I've learnt things right, offering a wrist way ahead of you (as in fencing) is a totally stupid idea in front of a japanese swordsman.

Saber's a slashing weapon. You couldn't cut it off, but you could do some pretty bad damage.

That being said, the leg isn't even target in saber, so.
