Just a lost leg; the headshot didn't connect

OldScratch - 2007-12-13

Fencing slaps Kendo's flabby ass to the mat, rolls the mat up and smokes it like a delicious Cuban blunt. Vive l'escrime!

FatFatuousNation - 2007-12-13

Obscure nerdy video. +1 for being short.

glasseye - 2007-12-13

Both kendo and fencing are to real sword fighting as RC cars are to real racing.

Jefka - 2007-12-13

...Or Kendo/fencing is to real swordfighting as your painfully obvious comment is to anything containing insight or originality.

Are bouncers even allowed to carry real swords?

Frostilicus - 2007-12-13

Some beardo talking about REAL SWORDFIGHTING over the internet is the bread and butter of the internet

Albuquerque Halsey - 2007-12-13

More like pizza and ranch dressing of the internet. AMIRITE?

Princess v2.1 - 2007-12-13

Tell me more Highlander

glasseye - 2007-12-14

Beardo? Nah. Just a dude who does western martial arts.

glasseye - 2007-12-14

OH NOES I'M NOT ORIGINAL I'LL CRY ALONE FOREVER.

Or not.

don piano - 2007-12-14

how many times have you stabbed a dude with a sword

Syd Midnight - 2007-12-14

If by "sword" you mean "giant metal cleaving and bludgeoning instrument" then yeah, you'd use a different style with one of those.

glasseye - 2007-12-14

I admit a 3 lbs sword is ab it heavier than a 12 oz foil, but it's hardly a "giant metal cleaving and bludgeoning instrument." You might be thinking of a glaive.

zatojones - 2007-12-14

western martial arts = SCA

Hooper_X - 2007-12-14

Western martial arts? Is that like when you hit a guy on the head with a mug of sarsaparilla?

glasseye - 2007-12-14

"western martial arts = SCA"

Uh, no. SCA combat is a fancy game of tag like kendo and fencing. WMA is the study of martial arts as practiced in medieval europe, without kludgy scoring systems.

Hooper_X - 2007-12-14

So hitting a guy on the head with a tankard of grog, then.

Rape Van Winkle - 2009-02-09

sasparilla. haw haw haw.

Rape Van Winkle - 2009-02-09

Grog. haw haw haw.

Caminante Nocturno - 2007-12-13

Idiots! Fall back and use your projectile attacks! What is wrong with you?!

cognitivedissonance - 2007-12-13

Here is where Nippophiles sputter and refuse to admit that Western Culture may have actually contributed something to the world.

glasseye - 2007-12-14

fencing != western martial arts

NineEleven - 2007-12-14

HAY GUYZ I GOT MAI WESTRN MARSHAL ARTS HEAR

glasseye - 2007-12-14

At least I'm not a bouncer.

Scynne - 2007-12-14

As a fencer, I can confidently say that I have never called it 'western martial arts'

Billy Buttsex - 2007-12-14

Dear Nippophiles (whatever the fuck THAT means):

Western culture contributed EVERYTHING good to the world.

sannyasin - 2007-12-14

Modern fencing and (as far as I can tell) Kendo are sports, not martial arts. Both have artificial rules and the goal is scoring points (as opposed to learning how to actually duel and live to tell about it). That said I love fencing to death and agree with its description as physical chess. The closest you will get to real sword fighting in fencing is epee since there are fewer rules to restrict it. However it is a SPORT and there are things I do in it to score a point that I would never do if I were wielding a real blade in an actual duel.

sannyasin - 2007-12-13

I fenced both sabre (which is what the guy in the video is using) and epee. Could it be that the kendo guy is thrown off by the different style? I used to throw off sabre fencers when I would use point attacks which are valid but most sabre fencers only think cuts and forget how to parry point attacks. Also anyone know the rules of kendo (e.g. right of way, point scoring, ...)? My quick search on wikipedia didn't turn up anything in depth.

don piano - 2007-12-13

It's pretty simple, kendo has no concept of a lunge, so there's no way a kendoka could possibly compete in a fencing match. Not that that's necessarily what's going on in this video or that we have any idea what this video is. +1 star for at least not wasting five minutes of my goddamn time.

mouser - 2007-12-14

don piano:

er, keep in mind kendo is a sport derivative of an actual martial art and not an effective means of sword fencing per say (as in "I got to it this sucker before I die" type of scenario).

A more complete nippon sword technique does make use of "lunge". In katori shinto ryu, it's actually called a tsuki attack and you better believe that done right, it's a pain in the ass (or eye ball, depending on which way you're facing).

That said, for having done european (pre-epee medieval wielding that is) sword fencing and doing katori right now, I still dont know which would have the advantage in combat: the heavier europeans weapons and armors versus the surgical precision and speed of the lighter nippon stuff.

Later in history, though, I think the outcome is even less predictable between a foil and katana. But if I've learnt things right, offering a wrist way ahead of you (as in fencing) is a totally stupid idea in front of a japanese swordsman.

don piano - 2007-12-14

1. it's "per se"
2. do you stab people
3. is fencing a martial art
4. let's put a soccer team up against an american football team to finally settle whether soccer is better than american football

Mayberry Pancakes - 2008-01-15

I HATE PEOPLE WHO DO POINT OF LINE IN SABER

YOU DICK

seriously though, I'm a lot better at defending it, but damn if it doesn't piss me off

dichoticwarior - 2007-12-14

LIGHTING BOLT!

1394 - 2007-12-15

SLEEP. SLEEP.

phalsebob - 2007-12-14

Let me add some gravy to the beard. You can't compare the two fighting styles quite like this. The Kendo fighter should be in heavy Samurai armour, making him easier to strike, but much harder to harm with a puny fencing sword.

Better yet, both fighters should be in furry costumes and wielding lightsabres.

Syd Midnight - 2007-12-14

The saber guy needs an ornate moustache and 3 Musketeers costume.

cognitivedissonance - 2007-12-14

And, by comparison, let's put the fencer in Western metal armor from the same period, and watch the lacquered wood samurai get fucked up.

El Zapatista - 2007-12-14

lacquered wooden armor? Is that some fancy euphemism for iron?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoroi

Jaguar Wong - 2008-02-13

Western metal armor from the period? So you mean no metal armor, since by the time sabres like that were used nobody wore anything like that unless they were a proto-SCA fag.

Vicious - 2008-01-13

Can you cut off a leg with a fencing foil? I was under the impression that fencing weapons were used to put out eyes/hit arteries.

Mayberry Pancakes - 2008-01-15

Saber's a slashing weapon. You couldn't cut it off, but you could do some pretty bad damage.

That being said, the leg isn't even target in saber, so.

Jaguar Wong - 2008-02-13

Sabre is theater! Apparently Kendo is too.

FABIO2 - 2008-03-31

You mean in a contest of who could tap the other guy, the lighter quicker bendy noodle sword won? GASP

I really, really hated the fencers who used their weapon more like a whip. Fucking flickers.

gambol - 2008-04-01

This is the worst thread of comments on this site.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-04-11

Agreed. And it couldn't have happened for a more appropriate video.

Spastic Avenger - 2008-10-29

This is like playing chess against draughts. Or, for the denizens of the internet, this is like playing Warhammer 40,000 against Battletech.

William Batty - 2008-11-18

I'm an experienced fencer, I fight lots of different sorts of martial artists in sort of informal freestyle shinai fights, and I do fine against all of them. Saber edge rules with epee target area and right of way leads to something pretty close to the genuine fighting styles of longsword/rapier fighters in Europe.

I don't know of any historical duels having occurred between feudal Japanese and European fighters; but it's certainly the case that light weapons fighters completely dominated heavy fighters once their weapons and fighting styles became sophisticated enough. Samurai did seem to elevate swordfighting to an almost mystical level of skill, however. It would be an interesting fight.

kingofthenothing - 2009-04-18

I'm pretty sure it would end up a lot like the ending from Rob Roy. One guy with lots of little cuts and scratches and the other dude cut wide open.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-08-05

1,000 Papercuts Of Death no-jutsu!

Lies, lies, LIES! - 2009-10-01
