Baldr - 2008-01-07 As I understand it, the republican party contains a lot of libertarian-types who are fiscally conservative but socially liberal, and favor a non-interventionist foreign policy. What this is over is that this subset of conservatives has always compromised on social issues and foreign policy for the sake of decreasing the scope of government. However, over the last eight years a republican president and a significantly republican congress have spent tax money like crazy, increased the national debt, and involved the country in an occupation that wasn't going too well last time I checked.
In my opinion, the entire Ron Paul movement is about this subset of republicans who have been instrumental in the last two elections, but feel betrayed by their party. Sean Hannity and Fox News in general have been largely dismissive of Ron Paul, due to his isolationist stance, which, as you can see, generates a bit of a reaction.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-01-08 Whereas Huckabee is running on the fiscally liberal, socially conservative, humanitarian interventionist platform, which also a great number of Republican members, particularly evangelicals, consist of.
This group was even more instrumental in creating the GOP dominance of the Bush era, and they also feel screwed as they start to realize that despite the gay marriage controversies stirred up around election time, nothing was really done on their behalf. And, although to a lesser extent than Paul, the GOP is also shunning Huckabee.
So to be supported by the GOP, you've got to act like you hate gays and abortions while doing nothing about it, and act like you hate big government but constantly increase it in spending. So basically just be a more hypocritical and militaristic Democrat.

I love this season's Republican Primary.
Talk Radio and Fox news have gotten used to telling only one side of a story (Bush's) for the last six years. Now that they are "covering" a Republican Primary, each with their own horse (Fox/Hannity = Giuliani, Hewitt = Romney, Ignrahm = Thompson), they don't have the luxury of their audience only hearing one set of RNC talking points. I am amazed at the degree to which these conservative talking heads will slander fellow Repub. candidates (McCain, Romney, Huckabee, and Paul all getting the worst of it).
I actually heard a listener argue with a talking head "If its OK to not vote for a muslim, why can't I discriminate against a Mormon as well" ... LOL
The result is reasonable Republicans are starting to understand just how biased their media outlets are.
