Ducks are wonderful creatures and there is absolutely no excuse for such inhumane treatment.

These birds only appear to suffer. They don't possess the brainpower to be aware of their own state of being. You could enjoy foie gras without guilt if you just stopped anthropomorphizing them.

Hmm... Well, genetically modifying new birds to force feed themselves is trivial. It would also probably cost less in the long run.

People, people. The real issue here isn't the force feeding, or the cages, or the fact that it's French. It's the fact that foie gras is about as edible as turpentine and marbles. Maybe it's just that my palate isn't refined enough to appreciate the subtle complexities of thirty dollar a pound squishy Gallic bird liver, but I can't say my life would change all that much if foie gras ceased to be produced.

Now caviar and Dodo eggs, that's a different story!
