My favorite line in cinema history has to be the "He'll see everything! *paper rustling* He'll see the big board!!! *point*"

best movie ever.

"Gentlemen! You can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Something I love about Strangelove, that I had a hard time remembering until I showed it to other people who were seeing it for the first time, is that the movie actually doesn't feel like a comedy for a long time after it starts out. Kubrick's deadpan camera and the relentlessness with which he lays out the scenario give it a feel of a thriller; Buck Turgidson's bedroom interlude feels more like comic relief.

*Right here* is where the movie crosses the line into comedy, with five words at the end of an otherwise terrifying speech. Absolutely perfect.

When my friends and I rented this in high school, we stopped during this very speech and returned it, without watching the rest. When I finally watched it years later it was twice as surprising.

Sterling Hayden is one of my all time favorite actors. He had an amazing Hollywood career, appearing in films that spanned the entire history of film noir, and being a favorite of Kubrik besides. There isn't a role he took that he didn't own.

He wasn't all that into acting, and he took a break to become a commando and run guns into Yugoslavia during WWII.

The scariest part was that there was people who SERIOUSLY believed that the fluoridation of water WAS a communist plot.
I've done some reading on the subject, and that's just ludicrous.

It was a clever scheme to dispose of floride waste from the aluminum industry - why pay to dispose it properly, when you can convince cities to BUY the waste, then basicly flush it down the drains of the municipal water system?

Reading (and poking holes in) conspiracy theories is a hobby of mine.

There's a nice Col. Ripper tribute in 'Raising Arizona': as John Goodman and Wm Forsyth are cleaning up in a gas station restroom after breaking out of prison, you can see the same OPE/POE graffiti in the background as in Ripper's washroom just before he shoots himself.
