Gamara II - 2008-02-25

Why is it that, roughly speaking, about 90% of kittens and puppies are cute, yet it's an anomaly bordering on miraculous when our own offspring are actually this cute? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who feels like this. Cuteness is obviously in the eye of the beholder, so how did we get to be so bass-ackwards in our perception?

Billings - 2008-02-25

My niece is this cute. She is kinda bossy, though.

Rabid Vegan - 2008-02-25

Because we can't understand kittens and puppies, otherwise we'd view their cuteness the same as that of our own spawn. Instead of "yip yip" and "mew" we'd hear "I GOTTA PEE I GOTTA PEEPEE WANNNA BICKIT BICKIT HUNGRY I WANNA DWINK NOW!!! I'M NOT TIRED WANNA WANNA POOPOO!!!"

EvilHomer - 2008-02-25

It's doubly weird because cuteness is defined by the features of our offspring- animals, cartoon characters, even adults that we perceive as "cute" are viewed that way, to a very large degree, because they retain features common to juvenile human beings, like large eyes, rounded features, and disproportionate limbs. Stephen Jay Gould wrote an excellent and highly entertaining essay on this ("Neoteny in Mickey Mouse", or something) if anyone's interested.

Maybe disliking strangers' children is a counter-reaction to discourage us from wasting resources helping the little cretins, so as to better focus on our own and those of people closely related to us (biologically and socially)?

Syd Midnight - 2008-02-25

A big part for me is novelty. Everything is so new to a kid, and they don't understand the subtleties. One of the cutest things I ever saw my year old niece do was discover and experiment with refrigerator magnets. All "Look! How did that happen?" "Baby tasting first lemon" would be almost as cute if it was an adult who had never tasted "sour" before.

From a little kids POV, Star Wars may as well be a historical documentary. With a 3 year olds grasp of science, it's all plausible.

Mayberry Pancakes - 2008-02-25

I sit for a girl who's this cute (and also kinda bossy). Plenty of kids this cute exist; we just don't pay attention to them.

Harveyjames - 2008-02-25

Wow thanks for that Stephen Jay Gould thing!

It's amazing that she's only been alive three years.

NoCode - 2008-02-25

I was totally on board with you and feeling a big "meh" on this one, until she said, "But don't talk back to Darth Vader, he'll getcha!" Then I went TEEHEEHEEHEE. So it ended up being cute after all.

Gamara II - 2008-02-25

Nocode, I think this kid is definitely cute, but she's an exception to the norm. Hence the 4 stars.

KnowFuture - 2009-03-24

Actually, you can condense the non-cuteness of toddlers down to one word: NO!!!

Once a little kid discovers the power of that word, every adult around them is fucked in terms of peace and quiet for about 15 years.

fluffy - 2009-08-28

Cats and dogs evolved to take advantage of our cuteness receptors. It's a survival strategy.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-02-25

They're not going to have her recap episodes 1-3 because, really, a kid that old shouldn't be swearing.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-02-25

I guess I should also rate this, huh?

Frank Rizzo - 2008-02-25

needs more sparkling wiggles.

ztc - 2008-02-25

She's going to grow up to be a chain-smoking flapper from the 1920's.

zerobackup - 2009-04-11

Mr Show strikes again

Gill_Sans - 2008-02-25

It really was an exciting movie.

Hugo Gorilla - 2008-02-25

But don't talk back to Darth Vader, he'll getchya.

Hooper_X - 2008-02-25

her eyebrows do not lower.

elm axo - 2008-02-25

Funnily enough Lucas used the name 'Shiny Guy' and the term 'Light up Sword' in the first few drafts of the script

TeenerTot - 2008-02-25

It's so easy to imagine her in twenty years chatting up a friend over coffee in a Long Island accent.
"The shiny guy always worries."

PocketMirror - 2008-02-25

Aww now I'm gonna think of the Death Star as a giant pokeball FOREVER. Darth earned his Alderaan gym badge, that's for sure.

jmags - 2008-02-25

If you watch it again, you'll see that she's referring to something else when she says pokey-ball.

athodyd - 2008-02-27

pokeball completely destroyed me

Stopheles - 2008-02-25

The shiny guy DOES always worry, come to think of it.

charmlessman - 2008-02-25

www.FistOfBlog.com

Because it's awesome and the Middle finger of the fist made this video of his daughter.

This video never gets old. Seriously.

steelcat - 2008-02-25

The shiny guy always worries!

cognitivedissonance - 2008-02-25

It's amusing to consider that we ALREADY know what she'll look and sound like as a senior citizen.

Billy the Poet - 2008-02-25

Gotta be coached. No non-animated creature is this cute and full of malapropism in the real world. Still adowable.

Stopheles - 2008-02-26

I talked about Star Wars pretty obsessively when I was about the same age. It was the first movie I watched all the way through...

Cube - 2008-02-26

That's what I thought. Can't say that I've ever talked with a three-year-old American, but many of her phrases just seem out of place. It could of course be, that her parents talk that way and she's just imitating them.

Muddy Mae Suggins - 2008-02-29

I work with three year olds pretty often. You'd be surprised at what they're capable of saying on their own. This has obviously been cut down to help us understand. I'm sure there was a ton of gibberish and off topic nonsense throughout. Not coached though.

Camonk - 2009-10-03

Sigh.

Children don't imitate their parents very much (of course they DO, but by this age, imitation is a pretty small part of their repertoire). Also, by three they've mastered a lot of their language. Some will be more advanced, too.

Uulanbaatorbaby - 2008-02-25

How can something get better every time you watch it?

takewithfood - 2008-02-25

You just know there are some nerds watching this, shouting "oh my god, that is SO inaccurate" at their monitors.

tamago - 2008-02-26

We seriously need a sister site called PortalofCute. I'd watch the fuck out of it every day.

Pacobird - 2008-02-26

The sippy cup is what ties this together for me.

Also, 5 stars for chronological accuracy.

B. Weed - 2008-02-28

"This is a private video. If you have been sent this video, please make sure you accept the sender's friend request."

So is this pretty much dead to PoeTV now?

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-03-18

OBEY KENOBEY TEATSES LUKE HOW TO USE THE LIGHT-UP SWORD

Camonk - 2008-04-01

I'm just sad she doesn't weigh in on the greedo shot first controversy.

RockBolt - 2008-04-09

Its a garage sale, but for robots

Baby Finster - 2008-05-19

Yes.

Pie Boy - 2008-04-10

She understands it a whole hell of a lot better than I did when I was three.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-05-03

I hope she reviews Aliens next.

Keefu - 2008-07-24

A horrified, scarred child isn't very adorable...

Merkwuerdigeliebe - 2008-08-04

It's an exciting movie.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-10

His little light-up sword?

HOW DARE YOU?!

Ashenblade - 2008-09-13

Was I the only one that feels sad that she thinks Obi-Wan just disappears?

zeuspopsicles - 2009-08-11

that's kind of what death is like to a kid that age.

soci-o-path - 2008-10-10

I never thought it possible but I have discovered something just as cute as ABCDEF...Cookie Monster ^.^

LazarusOfEarth - 2008-11-28

Very cute!

zerobackup - 2009-04-11

Kinda like a garage sale, except they're selling robots.
