In the early 90s I remember they packaged this movie to look like one of the infinite cute talking animal cartoons that were out at the time. I can't imagine how many young minds were blown/scarred as a result.

I know I was. General Woundwort is horrifying.

Scynne - 2008-03-05

The scarring I received from this movie is probably the reason I'm on PoE today...

Another casualty here. I got this as a free rental from the kid's section.

A hundred thousand million hugs to Syd Midnight for submitting this.

I have nothing but pleasant memories of watching this movie when I was a wee tot, and this film is what made me want to become a writer, since it inspired me to read Watership Down at a ridiculously young age and got me all hooked on books and whatnot.

Now when I watch this movie as an adult I'm pretty surprised that it didn't give me nightmares when I was five. Or ten. It's pretty violent in some parts, and the Black Rabbit in this scene is also pretty fucking crazy.

I have a Black Rabbit tattoo now and am hoping to get one of El-ahrairah (from this scene) soonish. A million hearts and stars and unicorns and rainbows for Watership Down.

They made some irritating changes from the book, but the rabbit creation myth was one hundred percent perfect. And seeing rabbits tearing each other apart in bloody combat was an eye-opening experience for an eight year old.

IMDB shows that there are three movies based on Richard Adams novels, but only two are animated fantasy. I was kinda hoping for a trilogy of deeply upsetting animal cartoons.

Oh, and well played with the "intelligent design" tag. :)

Plague Dogs is the grimmest film I've seen besides Threads.

This is proof of God's existence, and that he's a giant pomegranate

I saw this as a double feature with Animal Farm at the age of 12 or 13. I think if they showed these instead of Robin Hood and Lion King, the furry problem would pretty much just solve itself.

I can't even watch this, my mom rented this movie for me when I was running a really high fever once, and I have yet to conquer my intense fear of it. All I remember is sitting in the doctor's office twitching and having nightmares of bloody rabbits.

Oh childhood.

Syd Midnight - 2008-03-05

It wasn't any easier if you were lucid. "Bunnies OH NO WHY ARE THEY FIGHTING? Ooh, here comes a kitty OH GOD NO"

Old_Zircon - 2008-03-07

I barely remember this movie. I remember the book really well - I used to ask my father to read it aloud all the time before I was old enough to read - and I remember the movie doing it justice. This kind of confirms that.
