Plus this isn't a conflict about "Christian" vs "Muslim." If the terrorists do hate "our freedom" like Bush says, that freedom came from the Enlightenment and was first espoused by people who had abandoned traditional views on god in favor of Deism, which is the belief that he's there, but could give a shit. The ideals this country stands on were founded by people who started turning away from old "Christian" ideas such as the Divine Right of Kings, the notion that the downtrodden should wait for the afterlife, that unbelievers must die and women should make pie.

There's plenty of Muslims that have made that leap too, but the schism is much more recent in the Islamic world, so there are still atavistic douchebags like Osama bin Laden.

What really gets me is that the administration is whitewashing these horrible things by describing them with flowery language. It's not drowning, it's "waterboarding!" Kinda like surfing, cowabunga! And it's not 'torture', it's "advanced interrogation tactics!"

I wouldn't be surprised if the next thing they came up with was "in-touch familiar communication", where they drag in the subject's family members and friends and slowly dismember them in front of the subject until he talks.

You're going to find that most of our founding fathers were not anti-Christian. They just weren't interested in creating a government based on Christian doctrine.

I was raised a Protestant. I've read the Bible. I even believed in God up until I started studying genocide. You won't find a Christian-hating bone in my body--but the idea that this country was founded on Christian doctrine is just absurd. Freedom of religion, expression, and the right to one's own personal property are NOT Christian values. They're products of the Enlightenment.

I'm such a fucking asshole about this because we've replaced our real history with the magical story of how the virginal Betsy Ross was visited in a manger by Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin right after giving birth to Abraham Lincoln who would die for our sins of slavery on the cross.

This religious romanticization of history is how you control people.
