Nerd trivia: This is actually a dub of the American ad for the game, but no video of that version seems to have survived. It only aired a couple of times on basic cable.

nuzzles - 2008-03-27

I actually remember seeing the ad, but it was exceedingly rare. I have fond memories of this game.

Quad9Damage - 2008-03-27

I actually watched it on television years ago. I remember hearing Squaresoft's slogan announced at the end ("Maker of the world's greatest video games)" and thinking, "Well how come I haven't heard of them?"

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-03-27

That's not how it happens in the game!

... Is it?

Quad9Damage - 2008-03-27

Yeah, that's why this commercial always bugged me. In the game you pull the sword out of a stone after your ghost dad tells you to.

Although the stone IS in a pool of water, this ad just has the sword lying in a puddle for any random yahoo to pick up.

Xenocide - 2008-03-27

I don't think the ad is meant to be in any way accurate, just cute and appealing. I mean, he's standing in front of the damn Mana Tree. That would mean he somehow made it all the way to the end of the game without a weapon.

Quad9Damage - 2008-03-28

He also made it there without the Girl or Sprite (unless they're ghosts and invisible). The Spiky Tiger and Frost Gigas just... stepped aside.

The God of Biscuits - 2008-03-27

I hated this game. Nothing beats swinging your sword once and then running around like an idiot for 5 seconds while it recharges.

Quad9Damage - 2008-03-27

I enjoyed the game, in an ambiguously plotted, spend-3-hours-casting-the-girl-and-sprite's-magic-to-level-it-up sort of way.

Sudan no1 - 2008-03-27

I'm sorry you didn't have any friends or siblings to play the game with, Biscuits :(

Mushboom gets whacked!

An extra star for the creepy "THE SEEKRIT OF MAHNNAH" in German accent at the end.

Menudo con queso - 2008-03-27

JUST 3 hours? my GF spent many times that at it.

coprolalia - 2008-03-27

It was worth it for the top-level spell graphics.
All of a sudden your fireballs were DRAGONS.

AgentOrange - 2008-03-28

Cool commercial, great game.

StanleyPain - 2008-03-28

THis game had such an awesome soundtrack. I remember when I was a kid, just from this game I had memorized the name of: Jeremy Soule.

And I thought, boy, I want to hear him score some more games!

Xenocide - 2008-03-28

Soule didn't score this game, though. Google reports that the music was done by Hiroki Kikuta, who has only scored three other games, the only one of which ever made it to America was Koudelka (for the PS1)

Aubrey McFate - 2008-03-28

You're thinking of Secret of Evermore.
