FUN FACT: The Earthbound version of Giygas is based on a traumatic experience Shigesato Itoi had as a child. He accidentally went into the wrong movie theater and caught a glimpse of a violent scene from an adult movie, which he described as being a "direct attack on [his] brain." He wanted the fight to have that same effect on the player.

I mention this because even this parody seems pull off that effect quite nicely. Good lord.

But honestly I don't know. For some reason terror in an otherwise cute story always sticks out in my mind way more than an all-out horror movie. Maybe it's because I know it's coming in a horror movie. Who knows.

It's a pretty well-known piece of game trivia. And christ, the ending of Earthbound came out of nowhere. It was like reading a Peanuts or Dr. Seuss book only to find the last 2 pages are illustrated by the guy who did those Stories to Tell in the Dark books.

Also, while we're discussing Earthbound trivia, in Giygas' final, destabilized form the outline of a fetus is easily discernible. There's a strong theory that, since the road of tubes leading up to the devil's Machine resembles a uterus, that Ness and co. traveled back in time to perform a symbolic abortion on Giygas.
