This is the pinnacle of the mexican standoff. This movie is one of the best westerns ever made and you get all pissy because you don't have the attention span to watch as the suspense builds.

I've wondered that myself, I figure they didn't want to put a squib down for every shot, or bother with the foley. I guess movies didn't get awards for competent sound back then. That's the only part that sucks nowadays.

For what its worth, most movies nowadays, if they don't make their own, choose between 1 of 3 ricochet effects. If you ever had to mess with those 3 ricochets in an audio program, they burn into your brain and ruin every made-for-TV movie.
