Take that MOM!!!! all those cheeto fueled nights have paid off

baleen - 2008-05-01

Impossible to shoot this game in any interesting way. What were they thinking?

At least have some cut aways to some CG balls of lightning and shit.

Hooker - 2008-05-02

Half-assed CGI would really give this the respectability it desperately needs.

I know how this game is played and I know what all those cards are (I know), and I still couldn't follow any of it. Also, the numerous other things that are wrong with it.

I think I played it two or three times in high school and couldn't really get into the level of dorkiness that it entailed. I was recovering from my more crippling adolescent nerdiness and was smoking a lot of weed. The game we liked to play was Illuminati, also Civ the boardgame was pretty good. I remember I scored like three ounces of pot and we had an all night Illuminati tournament. It was great fun.

And somehow we both wound up on poeTV.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2008-05-01

A brother of my friend is a judge for the DCI and thus has been to Tokyo, Berlin and all those other fancy tournament locales.

The way he brags about landing so much pussy is simultaneously shocking, envy-inducing and depressing.

quality of quantity, dude

zatojones - 2008-05-01

quality OVER quantity, that is

anvill - 2008-05-01

Quantity has a quality of its own.

That quality is most likely syphilis.

'Cause hard to get hot chicks are always clean?

rustedmutt - 2008-05-01

Just in time for the release of the newest M:tG expansion, too.

I work at a book/card/boardgame store, and we do alot of business and events for Magic. We also have alot of regular customers that run the gamut of other geek subcultures...furries, trekkies, star wars, miniatures gaming, etc.

By far, the most annoying, rudest, and in possession of the worst hygiene are the Magic players. There are plenty of good kids, yes, but the stankies drown them out.

Smellvin - 2008-05-01

I thought this was an edited joke. Once I realized that this actually was on ESPN, I could only smile.

dancingshadow - 2008-05-01

Same here.

I'm just... stunned.

I actually caught a bit of this when it aired.

I was stunned. Then I was sad.

Aernaroth2 - 2008-05-01

Truly, we are witnessing a match between two finely tuned athletes.

StanleyPain - 2008-05-01

What struck when I first saw ESPN running these things is that they didn't even try to add any elements at all that would allow non-players or casual players to watch it at all. I mean, this isn't football or basketball. If someone misses a shot in basketball, 99% of people at least KNOW that's not good. But here they make no attempt to even explain the game or the cards AT ALL. Maybe it's changed now, but that's how I remember the early years of these things on cable.

coprolalia - 2008-05-01

They did make a lame attempt to explain the premise of the game the year I saw this. It would probably repel anyone over the age of eight rather than promote interest.

BHWW - 2008-05-01

SONOVABITCH I DON'T THINK I CAN STAND MUCH MORE EXCITEMENT WATCHING THIS! THESE GUYS ARE TAKING IT TO THE EDGE!

coprolalia - 2008-05-01

Fun game. Obnoxious player base. Not good TV.

RomancingTrain - 2008-05-01

What the hell? Turn 10+, Mirage/Tempest was really slow.

phalsebob - 2008-08-23

Watching this has an excitement level somewhere between watching golf and watching paint try. The only possible upside would be the anticipation of seeing a 230 pound 15 year old cry and throw a tantrum in defeat.

FineFilter - 2009-03-13

ALL IN!

Riskbreaker - 2009-12-14

Slooooooooow sports day.
