Y'know, I'm probably comitting Heresy here but Robotech is substantially better than any of the series they cobbled it together from.

Lindner - 2008-05-06

Not at all. Most people agree, I imagine.

Xenocide - 2008-05-06

I liked it better, too. The transitions between seasons are a tad clumsy, but in the end it really feels like this huge multi generational scifi story and that's pretty damn cool.

metalgazebo - 2008-05-06

Seriously. You've got Macross, which is Gundam rip off made specifically to pander hideously to the Otaku crowd with a fairly decent budget and two series that were regarded as at best mediocre.

Sometimes the original series isn't better.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2008-05-07

Well you seeee... God I've been fagging this up more than Freddie Mercury/Liberace duet in a San Francisco bath-house, but still-

Macross was pretty innovative in it's own right. But it was more of an evolution than anything else. If anything, it gave Shoji Kawamori permission to go through with stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Vision of Escaflowne.

Besides, Macross Plus pretty much makes for any wrong this franchise has ever caused.

metalgazebo - 2008-05-07

I don't disagree that it was innovative.

My issue was that the innovation it brought to the table was Minmai.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-07-01

I got to this party late: MetalGazebo already said what I think.

zatojones - 2008-05-06

I liked Robotech when I was a kid. I don't know what this "Macross" thing you're mentioning is

Camonk - 2008-05-06

Yeah I don't know what the fuck Macrame or whatever the fuck is. I do know what I'm doin' next time there's an anime convention in town!

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-05-06

Bring up Robotech at an anime convention, and they'll call you 'Grandpa' and laugh at your wrinkly old ass.

Lindner - 2008-12-29

I remember prior to the advent of DVD when there were huge groups who argued over subtitled or dubbed VHS being the proper format, and those laserdisc parties when some sad fuck shelled out hundreds of dollars to import LD collections of Ranma, with a japanese exchange student on hand to translate on the fly. I remember when a friend and I got into a long standing argument about whether Aa Megami-sama was appropriately known as "Oh My Goddess" or "Ah My Goddess".

Essentially what I'm trying to say is "Fuck them. They're stupid fucking kids. Eventually, I hope they will grow the fuck up."

... looking at my friends from back in the day now, I realize the escape rate for otaku is depressingly small.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-12-29

That's a pretty angry story.

KnowFuture - 2008-05-06

...which will result in an even bigger pile of dead anime faggots....

kingarthur - 2008-05-06

I watched this as a kid and again in college out of curiosity. The horrible fate of Claudia still chokes me up. She sees her man die a hero, only to become an alcoholic second-in-command herself, only to be let herself be blown up out of despair while helping Rick's girlfriend get to an escape pod. I mean, that was some serious shit when you're a kid.

Fur is Murder - 2008-05-06

She and the rest of the bridge crew survive in Macross. Oh well!

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2008-05-06

Yeah, and Macross' official sequel was Max and Miriya having seven kids who save the universe by having those awesome transforming F-14s shoot laser beams by rocking out.

Think about that, MOTHERFUCKER.

Oh and I forgot to rate this.

Fur is Murder - 2008-05-06

Actually, only one of their kids is involved in the rocking-out-galaxy-saving hijinx of Macross 7. And so far, Macross Frontier has been making up very nicely for that faggotry.

Maru - 2010-10-14

Robotech's surprisingly adult themes blew my ****ing mind as a child.

Mad Struggle - 2008-05-06

I regret not ever being able to watch this show in it's entirety, but I'll blame that on the stations who showed it suddenly stopping or restarting at the drop of a hat.

Keefu - 2008-05-06

The captain and the pipe he used to smoke while brooding were my favorite characters in this whole show.

Unmerciful Crushing Force - 2008-05-06

I still need to finish my collection of all the boxsets. I've got several of the novels (admittedly unread) and tons of the Southern Cross comics (a surprisingly underrated arc in the story).

But yeah, besides Macross Plus, Robotech is a whole rates far higher on my 12 year-old coolometer.

Minmei's songs not withstanding.

Goofy Gorilla - 2008-05-06

I went to exactly one Anime Convention, was talking about Robotech with my brother, and a stranger came up to correct me immediately. It was a matter of seconds, and we were just having a private conversation.

BHWW - 2008-05-06

Great show, I thought at the time. Still holds up alright.

Though Robotech fandom itself has its share of beardos and such who argue over everything from their own takes on the Robotech timeline to the canonocity of the tie-in novels (seriously some people used to get really mad about that).

There's nothing like the rantings of some guy who gets up on his high horse because he was truly able to appreciate Robotech when it first aired because he was in college as opposed to all these childish "newbs" who couldn't because they weren't even in high school yet and don't take Robotech as "seriously as I do".

Jeff Fries - 2008-05-07

I never watched Robotech but it reminds me of when the only place you could see anime on TV was PBS. The computer graphics, for example, are PBS perfect.

Jeriko-1 - 2008-10-05

The third series always fascinated me. Too bad CN queered over the chances of picking that one up.

The Regis was awesome and creepy.
