"Is it really that different?"

McCain is describing a change of heart that occurred as a young man, after he left the United States and saw what other countries were like. He's not describing about how he was disdainful of his country up until the point where they started voting for his husband. Yes, there's a substantial difference, even if you disapprove of the tar-and-feathering Mrs. Obama is getting... which, for the record, I do.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-06-26

I'm one-starring the clip, not your comment. Apparently you're the only person who can think on this site.

Xenocide - 2008-06-26

You're missing the point (which is understandable as this clip omits the part where Dan explains it.) Both are stupid things to raise a stink about. Abrhams point is that the media pounced on one meaningless out-of-context comment, but ignored three other very similar ones (by the actual candidate, no less, not just his wife.) He's not going after McCain so much as going after the media.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-06-26

I've been duped, I tell ya! Sorry about the one star!

Cleaner82 - 2008-06-26

At the end of the clip he says McCain's words are eloquent and even inspiring. You people need to learn to decipher the English language.

fatatty - 2008-06-26

I'm pretty sure Michelle Obama never said she was disdainful of America in that comment. And I'm pretty sure her point of pride wasn't the fact that people are voting for her husband, but the fact that so many people are energized about his candidacy and politics in general, and the fact that this country is actually willing to vote for a black candidate despite our history of racism. A history (and present state) of racism that I think makes it hard for many blacks in this country to be very proud of their country.

I will concede though they are different comments, but I think he makes a good point about the media's eagerness to jump on Michelle while generally giving McCain a free pass on his faux pas. Though really "the media" is a bit too general of a statement since both candidates have substantial media bias in their favor in various newspapers, magazines, websites and tv stations.

Camonk - 2008-06-26

This is why conservatives are morons. Or, actually, it's one of the thousands of reasons. This blindered love of America makes them think that anybody who ever criticizes America is one: disdainful of it and two: somehow not a good American. What the fuck kind of thinking is that? McCain is saying that being away from America is what made him start loving it. Michelle Obama is saying that seeing her country grow up a little, and also try to move on from eight solid years of being deceived, used, and also of being stupid (oops, I must hate America) makes her proud of it for the first time in her adult life. Shit, okay. I still haven't been proud of America in my adult life, since for most of it, George Bush has been president and has made America an embarrassing place.

But yeah, Billy, the guy who CAN'T grok that is the only one here who can think.

kingarthur - 2008-06-27

In total agreement with Camonk on this one.

Cleaner82 - 2008-06-27

You leave my portly third grade teacher Mrs. Dykesenburg out of this.

StanleyPain - 2008-06-26

I don't think what McCain said is a big deal, nor do I think it should be pounced on. It's obvious what he was saying.
But at this point, it's plainly obvious that it doesn't matter WHAT comes out of his mouth, the media will give him a pass. He can continually get facts and issues wrong, and the media will still let him claim to be an expert on said topics. He can engineer smears and run attack ads and then claim he runs a clean campaign and the media will dutifully report it as such.

Exactly what drove the majority of journalists in this country to roll-over for the Bush administration and now roll-over for a would-be successor I can't say, but there's no question that's what's going on.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-06-26

I would like for you to list the number of magazine covers with John Mccain's face on them, and then contrast with the number of covers with Obama.

Cleaner82 - 2008-06-26

In a race between an old white man, and a black man with Hussein in his name, the old white man is never going to be the underdog.

fatatty - 2008-06-26

I have no idea where I would find numbers for magazine cover face time, but McCain himself has called the press "his base". Two AP reporters gave him his favorite kind of donuts before a media address (which got him a standing ovation from his base).

Then look at things like McCain linking Iran and Al Qaeda as a talking point, which the media excuses as a slip of the tongue. Or the lack of coverage of his temper in any meaningful way.

I'm not saying Obama hasn't gotten some padded treatment but the media wasn't exactly kind to him during the Rev. scandal or with his innocuous associations with Rezko, etc. There's media bias on both sides and it's not good for either side.

StanleyPain - 2008-06-26

Magazine covers? You're kidding right?

Tell you what. Show me where in the mainstream media (print or television or whatever) the press is pouncing on McCain's comments here to the same extent and in the same context they are Michelle Obama's comments.
That should be easy.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-06-26

Cleaner 82: is cultural anthropology 102 out already?

takewithfood - 2008-06-26

Magazine covers determine the leadership of your country?

Cleaner82 - 2008-06-27

Is the worst insult you can come up with still to imply that I read?

Billy Buttsex - 2008-06-27

My worst insult is that you were brainwashed by a fat dyke with an agenda.

phalsebob - 2008-07-06

Counterpoint: Billy has been brainwashed by a fat dyke with an agenda with a dick.

Top that, sir.

Severian - 2008-06-26

Dan Abrams may have a small point, be he's annoying as all fuck trying to make it.

Jefka - 2008-06-26

Seconded. Wait...

...is my score less than a star from Billy Buttsex's?

Christ.

Rozetta - 2008-06-26

Obviously, McCain's point is that his war experience brought about a sweeping change in his perspective. He never fully appreciated the United States until he was shipped off to Vietnam. While on board the USS Forrestal in 1967, he was sustained multiple injuries and was nearly killed when a fire erupted on the carrier; after twisting his way out of his Skyhawk, he courageously went to the aid of a fellow pilot who was still stuck. The ensuing explosion of an MK-32 left McCain with injuries to the torso and legs. Nonetheless, he returned to duty and was shot down later that same year. The Vietnamese mob that fished him out of Truc Bach Lake stabbed him and beat him to the point of breaking several of his bones. He was incarcerated at the infamous Hoa Lo prison, where he endured more than five years of torture and isolation. While there, he declined an offer of release, insisting he would not leave until his brethren could join him. Regardless of one's opinions about the Vietnam War, I believe most of us would have a greatly enhanced love of the United States had we endured such an ordeal in a foreign land.
So, effete POETV progressives, what have YOU done lately, besides daydream about balancing Obama's testicles on your chins?

Stog - 2008-06-26

I'd believe you a lot more if you provided evidence that you were in a torture camp.

GO BANANA

kingarthur - 2008-06-27

I thik Rozetta snuck in the back door from freep.

kingarthur - 2008-06-27

*think. Damn this keyboard and it's wireless ways!

DrVital - 2008-06-26

Put all the context around it that you like, but McCain's line of attack just got shut down.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-06-26

Wait, McCain is a hypocrite? The hell you say.

Cheese - 2008-06-26

I think a lot of people are missing the best part about his comment.

Hannity: What do you think spending so much time in solitary confinement does to a person?"

McCain: I THINK IT MAKES YOU A BETTER PERSON.

Wait, what? Being confined and tortured for two years makes you a better person?

kingarthur - 2008-06-27

We're not stripping you of your civil rights andshipping you off to Cuba with no evidence, trial, or appeal to be tortured for seven to eight years...WE'RE MAKING YOU A BETTER PERSON!

takewithfood - 2008-06-26

I understand what both McCain and Michelle Obama are saying and I don't have a problem with point of view.

I can see how surviving what McCain survived can give a person a new perspective on a lot of things: not the least of which is your appreciation of the freedom and security in a country like the U.S. I also understand how that perspective might make you a better person, or at least inspire you to try.

This crap gets an embarrassing amount of attention. Maybe 2% of the election talk I hear is actually about issues - the rest is just entertainment. Why the hell does anyone care what the would-be president's wife says? Unless her name is on the ballot, what possible impact does it have on the country when compared to issues and policy?

futurebot - 2008-06-26

HOW DARE ANYONE NOT LOVE OUR COUNTRY

ALL GOOD AMERICANS MUST PROJECT FEELINGS OF APPRECIATION AND ATTACHMENT ONTO A POLITICAL ABSTRACTION

I LOVE AMERICA SO HARD

Cleaner82 - 2008-06-27

YOUR CAPITALS ARE NOT CAPITAL ENOUGH FOR AMERICA

oswaldtheluckyrabbit - 2008-06-26

Well I love America ten times harder than YOU, Commie.

glasseye - 2008-06-26

Of course McCain doesn't love America. Conservatives hate all of the freedoms that America stands for!

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-06-27

It doesn't help things any that Fox News has since tried to erase all trace of him saying that from their website.

As if that would work these days.

Blaise - 2008-06-27

America hates America.
