This one's for you, xenocide.

Xenocide - 2008-07-10

I feel loved.

Xenocide - 2008-07-10

Your mom could only cook one food, and she never stopped talking about it.

wormy_the_hole - 2008-07-10

I remember thinking it was hilarious to make my favorite food "vagina".

HAVE SOME VAGINA AND GO TO BED

I was young.

RomancingTrain - 2008-07-10

"Oh Pokey, you don't like vagina, do you? Well T O O B A D!"

Quad9Damage - 2008-07-10

Hell, I still do that. It never gets old. The funniest line occurs after you record one of the melodies. "For an instant, Ness caught a whiff of vagina."

Meta-comment: Final Fantasy IV

Rename Tellah as Dinner, and his death scene consists of Cecil shouting "DINNER!!" where-upon he flashes and vanishes.

Annoying Old Party Man

Smellvin - 2008-07-10

Blue! Blue!

I'm one of those idiots who avoided this game for about a year after it came out thinking it was for little kids or something (which many people did thanks to Nintendo's shitty marketing campaign for the game in North America) and then eventually rented it discovering how awesomely fun it was. My only gripe with it, though, was its steep difficulty...you had to level the shit out of your party pretty much right from the beginning.

futurebot - 2008-07-10

Shitty marketing campaign? Those scratch and sniff things were awesome. EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS GAME WAS AWESOME

KnowFuture - 2008-07-10

This game is made entirely out of Win.

I would actually consider paying money for the soundtrack.

Aliens abducted a man named George, and his wife Maria, some time in the early 1900's. Maria, while in alien captivity, cared for and soothed an alien baby named Gigue with a lullaby. George however, stole the aliens' psi power and used it to escape.

Some years later, George came home, though Maria did not come with him and George would not talk about what happened.

Fast forward a few generations, and Gigue began his invasion of Earth as revenge for George making off with their secret psi powers. Ninten, George's great grand son, took up the fight against Gigue using his inherited psi powers. At the end of Mother 1, Ninten and his friends (most notably Loid and Ana) defeated Gigue by singing the same lullaby Maria sang; weakening Gigue by reminding him of his love for his inherited mother/Maria. This destroyed his body and halted his invasion.

Gigue lost his physical form and became Giygas; an intangible and limitlessly powerful entity who is no longer in control of himself, so he was imprisoned in the past within the 'devil's machine'. At some point then, Giygas set down a prophecy that a boy and his friends would come forth and defeat him, freeing him from his madness. Giygas shaped his prophecy around his memories of Ninten and his friends, which is why Ness, Paula and Jeff resemble Ninten, Ana and Loid so much. This is also why Ness, in his quest, had to learn the same types of melodies Ninten used to defeat Gigue before. It's also why the people of Magicant were so receptive to Ness and his quest.

Ness is a creation of and also the physical resurrection of Gigue. Gigue created this entity, in the form of a boy, in an effort to defeat himself because he knew he would become unstable and evil. It was important for Ness to defeat the evil side of his essence in Magicant, and then learn the lullaby necessary to pacify the pre-born Giygas/Gigue. Which was actually himself, sort of... (and also why during the final fight in Earthbound, Giygas knows the custom-named psi power the player created for Ness). (And also why the devil's machine has Ness' face on it when the player first comes to it).

At the end of Earthbound, Ness, armed with Maria's Lullaby, and with Paula's prayer, went back in time, and destroyed embriotic Giygas before he was able to reform into a physical body and become the evil Gigue, which lead to the events of Mother 1 (the final form Giygas takes is basically a fetus). Which is also the classic sci-fi circular time paradox, but whatever...

Ness' rival Pokey, through the entire game of Earthbound, was manipulating and using Giygas' power for his own purposes.

But Giygas, as Ness, was able to defeat himself in the past, in the devil's machine. Pokey however, still escaped to the future and was able to form the Pig Mask Army of Mother 3. I've never played Mother 3, nor do I really know the plot aside from Pokey's involvement.

This is also why the whole series is called "Mother" originally, since the plot focuses so much on Gigue and Maria, rather than some random kids in red baseball caps. Or maybe "Earthbound" described Gigue's quest to return to Earth to find his surrogate mother... I don't know. The symbolism the game's creator put into the end scene in the devil's machine is a lot stronger when you think of Giygas as a needy child struggling to re-find the love of his earth bound mother though... (the devil's machine is a vagina and cervix)
