These were Canadian intelligence agents who came to Gitmo to talk to the kid, a Canadian citizen who was brought to Afghanistan with the rest of his family by his fundie parents to die for Islam. This kid's older brother got out and gave information to the US and Canadian governments after his father tried to talk him into becoming a suicide bomber.

This kid (Omar Khadr) was 16 at this point. He's about 20 now, and still in Gitmo. He is said to have thrown a grenade that killed a US medic in the firefight in which he was wounded.

These alleged terrorists are being treated excellently as far as war criminals are concerned. Gitmo is the Ritz Carlton of POW camps so quit crying about it. No human rights violations are occurring here. People should apply their activism towards real atrocities like Burma.

You may want to consider that people are not war criminals until tried and convicted and thus not applicable to any 'justice' you seem to so fervently desire. As for torture, psychological torture is considered torture just as much as physical torture- and sometimes worse. You want proof but any source (say the numerous international human rights organizations that are saying YES we have proof the USA is doing these things) you will simply character assassinate.

The idea that torture has to include some sort of flashy physical beating or mutilation is outmoded. It's more possible and effective than ever to destroy a person's mind without leaving a mark. Just ask the psychologists who have been hired to devise methods to do just that. You think it's tame because there's no man in an iron mask being prodded with red hot pokers, but your thinking is in the dark ages. The only thing that needs to be tortured to crack a person, is their mind, and that's what Gitmo is designed to do.

I know a couple guys who spent time as guards at Gitmo. They absolutely hated the job- said it was the worst stint they ever had to do- but there's a lot more to the US military prison system than our shock-happy media likes to let on. Yeah, there's torture- err, sorry, "reasonable use of aggressive coercion", but Human Intel does whatever works, and for most cases it's less extreme than this. "Good cop, bad cop" routines and so forth: some Hajjis will narc on their buddies for nothing more than a burger and a Pauly Shore film.

Personally, I find that a lot more fascinating (and, in some ways, disturbing) than this stuff.
