I know he died and it's sad but this guy really annoys the hell out of me.

It's not the message and it's not that it's not wonderful.
I am cynical. He, as a person, is not terribly interesting to me. It's feel good stuff and I should feel good about it, but it doesn't make me feel good. It makes me feel like I'm watching Oprah, and that's not very fun.

jesustweak - 2008-07-26 I bet his childhood dreams did not involve dying prematurely. When it comes to terminal cancer, keeping a positive attitude is overrated. It is just a way to let others forget about their own death for a moment. A better lecture would have been: "Not only am I in better shape than most of you, but smarter as well. Why I am dying and not you useless assholes? Fuck you all!"

You certainly have extrapolated a lot of things about my life from a three star rating of a dead guy in pleated pants.
|
Rovin - 2008-07-27 baleen, you're the one who said you were cynical and that this fellow wasn't "interesting to you" as such. Keep others' viewpoints in mind when you say things like that.
Not to be critical, just objective.

FatFatuousNation - 2008-07-27 OH MY GOD HOW COULD YOU FIND HIM ANNOYING AND UNINTERESTING BALEEN DON'T YOU KNOW THAT HE IS DEAD THAT IS SO INCONSIDERATE I HAVE JUST MADE DOZENS OF JUDGMENTS ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER AND EACH AND EVERY ONE IS HIGHLY NEGATIVE I PRAY FOR YOUR SOUL
|
Rovin - 2008-07-27 OHMYGOD YOU JUST MISCHARACTERIZED THE PEOPLE WHO RESPONDED IN TURN.
Baleen is a nifty person and I wouldn't say it wasn't so.

Xenocide - 2008-07-27 OHMYGOD I TOO ENJOY THE CAPS LOCK FUNCTION.
Baleen, you don't to have find him interesting, but what intrigued me was your description of him as "annoying." Do all things either interest or annoy you? Or did this man constantly sneak up on you and slap you hard on the back of the head and yell "YOU CAN'T BE MAD AT ME! I'M DYING!"
Seriously, it seems like an odd thing to be annoyed at.
Though I have to admit that if I had the opportunity to talk to a packed room of a thousand or so people, all of whom were there to hear about how I'm going to croak and feel sorry for me, that would cheer me up considerably.
Ultimately though, if you know you're going to go out, that's all the more reason to spend the time you have left in a positive way. Being a mopey bitch is just going to make the whole experience that much shittier.

I don't disagree with those things. Not realizing your dreams is definitely a bad thing, and so is giving up on things. My gawd.
This man collects gigantic stuffed animals, and I'm being CRUCIFIED.
I thought I knew you people... Now I'm going to leave my apartment and realize my dreams. Goodbye.

Do you really want to play with me? It's not going to be fun for you, but it might be amusing for the class.

ChocFullOfFunk - 2008-07-27 What is this, the internet? C'mon you people.

I agree with Baleen that Pausch comes off as rather abrasive. Maybe it's the constant platitudes or the disney shirt.
Nevertheless, he accomplished exponentially more in his life than I have. And he met death straight on; he addressed it with humor, and was able to look back on his life with minimal regrets.
I hope that when my end comes I can do the same thing.

Diogenes - 2008-07-27 Right before I go I would like to give a lecture to an auditorium filled to capacity with my friends, family, colleagues, and former students. I would hope to be so entertaining that none of them will notice the gas seeping down from the ventilation system.

Didn't realize he had died yesterday until this video went up. Still, I'm a little on the baleen side here. I appreciate his message and I'm obviously not knocking a guy who tries to do such a thing when facing death, but at the same time, his "message" comes off as trite when it's simply marketed as yet another fad-of-the-week self-help/self-realization thing. First was the book...then the video....NOW BUY THE COMPLETE PACKAGE COMPLETE WITH BONUS MATERIAL etc... He wrapped what he had to say in a very weak, consumer-culture oriented package that ultimately nullified a lot of the "break free for yourself" message he tried to convey. I'm not saying the guy tried to make money off it in some cynical way, but he allowed it to be co-opted in a way that, I think, ruined whatever he had to say. I especially liked the celebrities having their little photo ops with him and everything else, and it really begs the question of ultimately what his message actually meant to people: a way to make money off people also searching for meaning in life, or just to have their picture taken with him to make it seem like his wisdom, whatever it may be, somehow should legitimize their ideas? I dunno...call me jaded.

StanleyPain - 2008-07-27 Funny how you extrapolated a personal insult to me out of what I said, which wasn't at all knee-jerk and was relatively well presented for being in the comments of a video, whether or not you agree with it.
But, hope that internet tough guy thing works out for you. It's done wonders for so many others.
|
badideasinaction - 2008-07-29 Wow, this is the first time I've ever heard "you know, not all things liked by the crowds" as internet tough guy. You're the one who's all OH YEAH, WELL THIS IS ALL JUST A SELLOUT here. But hey, you can see how calling everyone who calls you out on your knee-jerk misanthropic opinions an internet tough guy works out.
|
Hooper_X - 2010-02-23 You know what? Fuck it, he sold out. Now his kids don't have to worry about college. Were I in his situation, I'd hope to hell I'd come up with as clever a nest egg as this one.
Sure beats cooking meth.
