So, it's kind of hard with the audio, but does anyone know exactly what the conflict here was?

MagickPoultry - 2008-08-12

Here's what I've found:

It seems each team is allowed to remove one judge out of five from the round. It seems that the beardo's team "struck" this woman because she had rated them poorly during previous rounds where she had judged.

Then, the other team made the argument DURING the debate that striking her was an enforcement of "white privilege." This team then won the debate. After the debate was over, there was some kind of heated exchange among the three remaining judges and one of them left in frustration. Right after that is apparently when this video begins.

I never did discern what exactly the debate was supposed to be about because the thread I found about it was too steeped in nerdy debate jargon.

StanleyPain - 2008-08-12

The debate, from what I've read, was about racism and race issues. And this guy thought it was bullshit that the team used the example of removing that judge as an example of inherent racism and was allowed to do that. After that it degenerated into some bullshit apparently only important and comprehensible to people obsessed with debate as a sport.

Justin Dohrmann - 2008-08-12

i'm kind of lost too, but it looks like the debate got a little too personal and turned into a free for all. i love watching this kind of stuff though. everyone is just paralyzed with awkwardness

Rovin - 2008-08-12

Pulling your pants down during an argument. THAT'S professionalism!

Enjoy - 2008-08-12

No, that's TENURE.

buttnutt - 2008-08-12

Mooning people is the fatality of debating.

Hugo Gorilla - 2008-08-12

And our next issue for debate is "Yo' Mama: So Fat or So Ugly?"

baleen - 2008-08-12

Ah, the classic argumentum ad proctologicam, first used effectively by Marcus Furius Camillus against the Gauls of Allia.

wtf japan - 2008-08-12

HA! I think I see a hole in his argument.

This is absolutely fantastic. No doubt, in the depths of human depravity, these academic types would still be spewing pseudo-sociological jargon at each other as they argued over a piece of rotten afterbirth. Also, needs a "being very un-Dude" tag.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-12

... this is the best comment that could possibly have sprung from this.

dueserpenti - 2008-08-12

I thought I had lost the ability to crack up at the pure irony of a situation, but I was wrong.

Smellvin - 2008-08-12

Needs "beardo" and "inappropriate sobbing" tags.

Dinky Patterson - 2008-08-12

Can't see them, but they're there.

StanleyPain - 2008-08-12

"Welcome to tonights finals. This evening our debate topic is FUCK YOU, NO FUCK YOU, NO FUCK YOOOOOU, NO FUCK YOU!!"

Tstyle - 2008-08-12

I think this is called the ponytail fallacy.

Udderdude - 2008-08-12

Trying sooooo hard not to be animals. And yet, total failure.

Ersatz - 2008-08-12

See, white people argue like this.

And black people argue like this.

Xenocide - 2008-08-12

When threatened, the male hairpile will launch into an aggressive display, whipping its deadly ponytail back and forth in an attempt to frighten off predators.

In the unthinkable event that this fails, it will attempt to regain its dominance by making a complete ass of itself. This behavior remains unexplained.

kennydra - 2008-08-12

I read this comment before watching the video (I wasn't going to until I read this and then I just *HAD* to). I think that made it way funnier.

dancingshadow - 2008-08-12

Despite his impressive ponytail, he is unable to continue his assault once his tightly braided foe obtained the higher ground.

Syd Midnight - 2008-08-14

He used the same debate tactic at the '68 Democratic Convention, but that time the cops ended up hitting him with a nightstick.

This is absolutely awesome.

Screwtape - 2008-08-12

PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THIS ACTIVITY = 5 stars.

The only difference between Highschool and College debate is a larger vocabulary.

charmlessman - 2008-08-12

Wow, Zach Galifiniakis is really taking his whole uncomfortable-reality comedy shtick to extremes.

Stupid Lisa Garbage Face - 2008-08-12

My favorite part was the screaming and crying
What happened to his shoes?

phalsebob - 2008-08-12

Finally, evidence of the elusive white hole.

Thatcher Pennywhistle - 2008-08-12

That black guy in the yellow t-shirt was crying like a fucking baby.

simon666 - 2008-08-12

If I had to live in Hays, Kansas, I'd be pissed too.

almo - 2008-08-13

"intellectual" individuals at work, everyone! Christ, it's like a real life internet discussion forum.

Favoriting this to remind myself not to get involved with these psychos.

Hooper_X - 2008-08-14

EVERYONE involved in this clip, regardless of visually perceived race, warrants the use of the "white people" tag.

ALTERNATELY:

Huh huh, they're "master debaters," Beavis.

Tuan Jim - 2008-08-14

THIS IS HUGE THIS IS HUGE

Stopheles - 2008-08-16

Right before the 6:00 mark, he starts moving exactly like "Macho Man" Randy Savage.

gambol - 2008-08-16

They don't seem to be very skilled in debate at all.

Slagathor - 2008-08-28

I love love love this video. The odd thing is that one of my friends works at Fort Hayes, actually "The Poet Shelley" in case you're keeping score.

Richmond - 2008-08-30

22 August 2008:

Fort Hays State University announced today that debate coach Bill Shanahan has been fired and the debate program suspended after the mooning incident that occurred at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) National Tournament in March.

Gwago - 2008-09-26

Watch it again and imagine that the people in that room are the last surviving members of the human race.

THEN it makes sense.

joelkazoo - 2009-07-22

joelkazoo - 2009-07-22

Dangit, I was trying to make it look like a BASIC program, and now it doesn't! :(

klingerbgoode - 2010-01-15

but white people debate like this!

klingerbgoode - 2010-01-15

oh my god i was beaten. that'll teach me to read the comments first.

anyway that ponytail man had no shoes.

FABIO - 2012-11-11

Debating is one of those important skills vital to discourse over issues that affect our lives...

but god damn do debate clubs spawn some insufferably shrill pricks.

FABIO - 2012-11-11

Exercising my white privilege to remove stars from previous comment.
