No.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-19

Definitely problems but we really are getting there.

Cube - 2008-08-19

It didn't replace anything! It was THE SAME FACE!

Yeah and also you could tell it's fake from a low-quality YouTube-video, I wouldn't put all your money on it yet.

kiint - 2008-08-19

um its not a fake, believe me

Frank Rizzo - 2008-08-19

and who the fuck are you?

oh right, no one.

kiint - 2008-08-19

who are you talking to there Frank?

baleen - 2008-08-19

WHITE RAGE

xennui - 2008-08-19

It's not fake. We're used these guys to do the facial animation for the latest Gears of War 2 trailer (Rendezvous w/ Death). They gots amazing algorithms =P

Cube - 2008-08-19

Umm yeah. I meant it's fake as in CG.

Chinballs - 2009-02-09

how often did you have to tighten up the graphics?

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-08-19

[marketing gobshite]
"Yes, yes, but does it work?"
"Nearly, it's in an advanced state of development close to beta."
"Stop wasting my fucking time, you bunch of cunts."
"Oh."

chumbucket - 2008-08-19

well heck, here's the kids' college money!!! When do we start rakin' in the profits???

Thatcher Pennywhistle - 2008-08-19

Facial animation is an easier problem to solve than rendering shaders that look like flesh.

fluffy - 2008-08-19

Flesh has been simulated pretty close to thoroughly at this point, and for stillframes it can look quite amazing. The problem is that the animation still has a few subtle "tells" when it comes to things like how things move. The motion still seems smoother than reality, and the muscles don't attach to the skin quite right.

Thatcher Pennywhistle - 2008-08-19

I think you're wrong. The uncanny valley isn't primarily a problem with animation. If you'd like to point out some still images of compter generated faces that can't be distinguished from real ones, I'd be happy to reverse myself.

Still, in real time apps like games, shaders are the gating factor.

dr_rock - 2008-08-19

stencil buffers.

fluffy - 2008-08-19

But seriously, look at the Image Metrics website, and tell me that's really convincing animation.

Also, lighting can be somewhat off without really tripping up the uncanny-valley sense (which is different than being able to tell it's CG), but the too-fluid animation is always extremely unsettling. It's like the skin is sliding over the surface and there's some weird undulating horror underneath.

fluffy - 2008-08-19

This demo is a bit confusing. It'd have worked better if they'd replaced the actress's face with a different face.

The low YouTube quality doesn't help to make any determinations, and neither does the not-very-realistic-at-all-and-a-bit-creepy animation on the company's homepage at http://www.image-metrics.com/

dr_rock - 2008-08-19

GAAAH!

sheikurbouti - 2008-08-19

Any time I need a low resolution CG character that looks like she once had a broken nose - I'm calling Image Metrics!

Merkwuerdigeliebe - 2008-08-20

I think she's digitally cute.

Tom Collins - 2010-11-26

She looks like she's trying too hard to look natural, and the constant looking away from the viewer and to the right is a cue that she's lying.

Perhaps if they used a more convincing actress as the basis it would be better.
