Can I break the meme now? Or does that cause seven years bad luck?

Here's the McCain campaign's response:
"Does a guy who made more than million last year, just got back from vacation on a private beach in Hawaii and bought his own million-dollar mansion with the help of a convicted felon really want to get into a debate about houses?"

This is hilarious on several levels:
The first is that McCain said just a few days ago that Million a year is the cutoff for rich, so I guess that makes Obama middle-class.
Secondly, the fact that Obama comes from Hawaii by definition makes him rich and elitist. So basically McCain is attacking Obama for going home and visiting his Grandma.
Third is that McCain just a few days ago did a fundraiser with Ralph Reed.
And finally, Obama's "mansion" is worth less than even the cheapest apartment McCain owns.

Am I missing any other levels of irony and hypocrisy there? Is that enough for now?

Xenocide - 2008-08-21

Well, sir, those are excellent points but I feel I must inform you that ZAPOW!

baleen - 2008-08-21

" According to annual earned income reports filed with the Federal Election Commission (see "Candidates' Financial Disclosures"), Obama raked in more than 0,000 last year, much of which came from royalties from his 1995 book, Dreams from My Father, and advances from his 2006 book, The Audacity of Hope.

When combined with mutual fund investments and assets, and salary of his wife Michele Obama, a hospital administrator in Chicago, the couple's income for the nearly million.

But Obama's personal total worth is between and 2 million, modest when compared to other presidential candidates who filed tax returns and financial statements with the election commission."

So McCain is just sort of making shit up? Buh.
By contrast, McCain's family fortune is estimated at over million dollars.

sheikurbouti - 2008-08-21

7 houses is actually a conservative estimate (he owns two lux condos in one building and usually counts them as one residence). Others have counted 10:

http://www.mccainvminnesota.com/cribs.html

IrishWhiskey - 2008-08-21

Oh God, it gets worse. From McCain spokesman Brian Rogers:

"The reality is they have some investment properties and stuff. It's not as if he lives in ten houses. That's just not the case. The reality is they have four that actually could be considered houses they could use."

"This is a guy who lived in one house for five and a half years -- in prison," referring to the prisoner of war camp that McCain was in during the Vietnam War. Rogers called the house story "by far the most personal attack" of the campaign, and said "it comes from a candidate who said he was against this kind of thing."

"In terms of who's an elitist, I think people have made a judgment that John McCain is not an arugula-eating, pointy headed professor-type based on his life story."

sheikurbouti - 2008-08-21

Consider: Under this administrations standards for torture, which McCain supports, John McCain was not tortured in Vietnam.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-21

What is all this shit about Arugala already?

IrishWhiskey - 2008-08-21

Jesus Christ. Remember that attack about how Obama can now afford a million dollar house?

According to his financial records, McCain owns a million dollar PARKING SPOT.

Obama's an elitist because he doesn't want to eat lettuce that's just green and water.

Angel Carver - 2008-08-21

EH.

I'm sorry but the simple fact of McCain's inability to COUNT how many houses he has needs a simpler, less somber and less nuanced presentation than Obama's campaign has given it. His team really needs to step it up: they turned pure campaign gold into bronze.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-21

With a scathing review like that one is left to wonder -- what would your ad have looked like?

IrishWhiskey - 2008-08-21

I agree actually. The number of houses is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of how out of touch McCain is. And "The fundamentals of our economy are strong" is not a very controversial remark.

Whereas McCain's comments that under Bush we made "great progress economically" or giving advice to people they should be “doing what is necessary — working a second job, skipping a vacation, and managing their budgets — to make their payments on time,” or his advisers comments that our economic problems are mostly "psychological" and a result of "whiners", all seem like better choices.

Rovin - 2008-08-21

In one of the debates - the one in the Reagan Library? - McCain said he tought we were better off than we were eight years ago. Now his ads are saying we're worse off than we were FOUR years ago. This is all by my maybe wrong memory, mind you, but with fuel like that, coming up with ads shouldn't be the slightest bit hard for the Obama people.

Having said this, there's no way Obama's people want to craft ads around McCain's elder-ditziness alone, quite simply because it looks like easy and mean old person insults, one step above "Can't get it up/balls hanging at your knees/unaware you're shitting yourself thus needing adult diapers" Spencer's Novelties Stores type lowbrow shit. Elderly people like to vote too, and a lot of people would see it as being just crass and mean.

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-21

The true issues are not important in a political ad. It's a cheap jab designed to sting, and it's very time-sensitive. All the stuff you're talking about has come and gone, everybody is already aware of these things. An ad detailing them would be seen as beating a dead horse, and it would be a fizzle of a reason to sacrifice the supposed 'high ground'.

This wasn't about McCain's age at all. It was about the implication that he had SO MANY HOUSES he couldn't even remember the number.

Rovin - 2008-08-21

I was writing in response to Angel Carver's point as to why "he's old and has trouble remembering things" ads aren't being made.

baleen - 2008-08-21

The point is that Obama's campaign has so much money that they can deliver relatively professional looking attack ads and broadcast in the same day.

Angel Carver - 2008-08-21

Rovin, my fault for being unclear and capping "count" like that. I wasn't referring to his Alzheimer's but to the number of houses. Cleaner82 put it better than I when he said "SO MANY HOUSES."

As for what a better ad might've looked like, how about a quick recap of McCain's fumble followed by "As millions of American families are losing their one and only homes, John McCain has too many houses to count. John McCain: Out of touch with America."

Cleaner82 - 2008-08-21

Actually, I like it.
