This was one of Chandler's best novels, too. I should definitely see this movie.

One of Altman's best movies. But it's a lot more Altmanesque than Chandleresque. A crazy cast, too: Sterling Hayden is great, and ex-pitcher Jim Bouton ("Ball Four") has a small but critical role. And Arnold himself has a cameo!

his first screen appearance, as "goon in underwear #3". with glorious pec flexing!

I don't know if it's one of his finest works but I'm glad to know at least one person out there loved this movie as much as I did.

Also whenever I see Elliott Gould in his prime I get pissed off at how a guy with so much talent could just burn right through it with massive amounts of cocaine.

The world needs more heavily and intricately plotted noir. It always does.

I've been trying to write an intricately plotted noir for about a year now. It's really not as easy as it looks.

I found it problematic the way they contrast Gould's innocent child of the 40s with the supposedly grown-up, shades-of-gray world of the 70s. But they took away my one-star so I'll just leave it at that.
