Wow, it's like Psych 101 all over again.

Skeletor in a wig helps an abused girl... I guess that Christmas episode stuck, after all.

Nova from back when Nova was worth watching.

Depressed the living hell out of me last night, and damn it, that's worth something.

Wanna kill yourself? Look up her life AFTER she got out of the house. It actually got worse. Foster parents are disgusting animals.

In 1975, Genie was returned to the custody of her mother, who wished to care for her daughter. After a few months, the mother found that taking care of Genie was too difficult, and Genie was transferred to a succession of six more foster homes. In some of the homes she was physically abused and harassed, and her development regressed severely. She returned to her coping mechanism of silence and gained a new fear of opening her mouth. This new fear developed after she was severely punished for vomiting in one of her foster homes; she didn't want to open her mouth, even to speak, for fear of vomiting and facing punishment again. Genie now lives in a sheltered accommodation in an undisclosed location in Southern California; it is at least her sixth adult foster home. Her mother died in 2003.

Genie is the saddest thing.

To unkill yourself and cheer yourself up a little bit, read this:

Reading that actually inspired me to post this documentary. That's also a very sad and fucked up story, but thankfully it has a much happier and hopeful ending.

She seemed to do really well with the sign language. I think she would have benefited from less focus on grammar. I know when I was learning American Sign Language, my grammatical structure was all over the place. There was a point in my development that I started following ASL grammar (which is more similar to French) even when I was speaking English, as though I had my wires crossed for a few months. English grammar is not the ONLY correct grammatical structure. She seemed to be inventing her own, and I don't see what's wrong with that.

Anyway, there aren't enough stars. That is an amazing story.
