CHILDREN!

I fucking hate the idea of little kids---or hell, anybody for that matter, but especially little kids who don't really know any better---being forced to pledge allegiance to any organization or government or any symbol that represents said organization or government. The God part just makes it suck a little bit more.

Billy Buttsex - 2008-09-06 Yeah, science forbid we teach any sort of value system based on loyalty to an organization we all depend on for our protection. They might start thinking about someone other than themselves! And then they won't be consumer whores!

Oh, wow, you guys got us Christians! As a rebuttal, here's an excerpt from the Constitution of the State of Massachusetts, 1780:
Chapter VI, Article I
"All persons elected to state office or to the legislature must make and subscribe the following declaration, viz. 'I, ______, do declare, that I believe the Christian religion, and have firm persuasion of its truth."
Most, if not all, of our original state constitutions, contained statements like this, and this pledge of allegiance is a poor attempt at getting Americans to secularize. It just shows how ignorant and brainwashed you kids are.

waxeater - 2008-09-06 The last sentence here is pretty great, at least as far as "irony" goes.
|
Gojira1000 - 2008-09-06 Magical thinking remains a bad fucking idea.

KnowFuture - 2008-09-06 *making an "eat a dick" macro to hit to reply to anything uttered by Billy Buttsex from now on*

True story--ever since middle-school, I always left out the "I pledge" part. I'd just mutter something else or just move my lips. It wasn't that I didn't like America; it was that the idea of pledging my lifelong allegiance to something I didn't completely understand struck me as terrifying, especially since, as a child, I took pledges to be a very serious affair.
Having grown up into someone who loves the principles America was founded on, I still think it's bull shit and a clear example of the sort of indoctrination nonsense you see in communist countries.

chumbucket - 2008-09-06 You think that's bad, try the Boy Scouts
|
Billy Buttsex - 2008-09-06 I didn't pledge allegiance to the flag when I was a kid either, for the same reason.
