To be more clear: The political stunt by the GOP... with commentary by Barney Frank.

Thanks: Thank you.

I never cared too much for Frank Barney when I've seen him on Bill Maher's show, but this was really great.

simon666 - 2008-09-30

strike that, reverse it.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-09-30

Hey Boehner. A fairy and a grandma just called you out as a pussy.

Might want to take a moment and reconsider your leadership right there. And while you're busy obsessing over poll numbers, check out what your little stunt did to the worldwide economy.

ProfessorChaos - 2008-09-30

As much as I hate this bailout mentality, Barney Frank has been a bastion of class and awesome during this whole affair.

The Great Hippo - 2008-09-30

Yeah, I'm actually secretly glad the bailout fell flat on its face, but I'm always up for someone accurately and clearly calling someone else for their shit.

The Great Hippo - 2008-09-30

'out for their shit', even.

Also, I don't know much about Pelosi, but is it possible she just pulled some Karl Rove level shit here?--I mean, the republicans are the ones who didn't get together enough votes for the bailout, which makes them look like twits and bolsters Obama while simultaneously dick-slapping McCain in his "ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO SUSPEND THE CAMPAIGN AND SAVE THE PRESIDENT" face.

I'm not saying she's pulling some Palpatine move here, but--bailout aside--politically? Things couldn't have worked out better for the democrats. The tinfoil hat part of me can't help but think that somebody on the democrat's side was HOPING for this.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-09-30

Naw, the Democratic leadership aren't that smart. Its just Republicans shooting themselves in the foot.

More specifically, Republicans knew they would be screwed if the bill failed, but would be helped if they gave the minimal votes and let Democrats pass it. The latter was likely to happen until McCain intervened and endorsed an "poison-pill" plan. Then House Republicans saw it an an endorsement of scuttling the bill, at a time they were already on the defensive about reelection. McCain is then caught off guard by the House GOPs support for an alternative he endorsed.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-09-30

Maybe she's finally learning to control the chess pieces. A bit late, but oh well.

baleen - 2008-09-30

Barney Frank isn't exactly a bastion of responsibility, but after six years of anybody in the House attempting to say anything against president Bush and being called a traitor by GOP leaders, my reaction is basically "How do you like them apples?" and "Fuck you you evolutionist warmongering debt making shits, go fuck yourselves, I hope your children are raped."

ProfessorChaos - 2008-09-30

Eh. The way the current Bailout plan flopped, it's hard to pin anything on one party entirely. More like the senior members of Both parties.

The younger ones who will have to DEAL with the consequences of this bailout idea seem to be wisely set against it.

fractured - 2008-09-30

Barney Frank's comments still seem to feed this facade that hides what neither side wants to say--no one wants to be connected to this bill, which is why many of the public statements have to do with bipartisanship. The House Republicans realized that they can use this same mode of thought for their own political interests: ultimately the defense of Reagan-era economics. I'm sure, like IrishWhiskey said, the House Republicans were hoping to make the Bailout plan seem like a partisan Democrat bill... Pretty evil. I'm sure it was all in mind before Speaker Pelosi's speech.

Camonk - 2008-09-30

This would be like watching clowns slap each other with fish if the market hadn't lost .2 trillion. So now it's like watching sad clowns slap each other with crying fish. Only the crying fish are orphans.

glendower - 2008-09-30

This is a great point made by Frank, but I think we're losing sight of the fact that the bailout is extremely unpopular among most citizens. I think the bailout is pure evil and I'm not upset to see that vote fail and frankly, for once, I approve of the Republican vote on this.

Mordant - 2008-09-30

I wouldn't call it "extremely unpopular" since poll results seem to depend a lot on how the pollster asks the question.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-09-30

Also most of the same people who strongly oppose it, also think we desperately need to pass it. Which makes sense really.

CornOnTheCabre - 2011-02-14

Well, yeah, but "most citizens" don't even have an rudimentary understanding of economics besides whatever talking head they decide to listen to/how big their tax returns are.

I'm not saying that the bailout is only unpopular because people are stupid, but I am saying that popularity isn't the best way to judge this bailout's effectiveness.
