This is why I don't get this show. The people who rave about it always point to the most non-sequitor scenes as proof of it's genius. Sure, in the context of the show, it's probably hysterical but here, by itself, it's not.

Although I think this is hilarious by itself, AD does rely on a lot of references to past episodes and in-jokes.

To be fair, that's what doomed it, and why it does so well on DVD. Had it been more episodic in nature it would still be on the air, but it wouldn't have been as sweet.

I never watched it when it was on TV, for some reason it sounded stupid to me and the commercials made it look dumb, but I got all three seasons on netflix last year and freaking loved it. Now I own all of them and have watched them all probably 3 times. I don't think I would have liked the show if i had to watch it every week though. It works better as a whole for sure, but it works VERY well.


Torture the Artist - 2009-08-12

I'm not saying Arrested Development wasn't absurdly self-referential, but I really don't see how this clip is an example of that. What additional context is missing here?
