That guy who nobody knows about may have sounded all cool that night, but he didn't become vice president.

This is actually one of the turning points in Quayle's career, and is probably one of the most painful zingers in history. Republicans appeased one another by paraphrasing this quote into the 90's EVERY SINGLE TIME a Democrat mentioned a politician from some other time. Quayle's response to it was notably unheroic.

Cena_mark - 2008-10-04 This year will be different from 1988. The ticket with the brilliant VP will win, as opposed to 1988 with the buffoon VP. Yes McCain Palin will come out victorious.

Desidiosus - 2008-10-04 That's trolling we can believe in!

I've never heard of Lloyd Bentsen before now, but I know I want to elect him to something.
Since Don LaFontaine's dead, couldn't we - oh, right.

Yeah, Dan Quayle. That guy was dumb.

I remember Bentsen's line being replayed on the news at the time, but I hadn't heard Quayle's lame, lame rebuttal before now. Priceless.

If Gary Hart didn't have an appetite for fellacious bimbos, we wouldn't have seen this brilliant barb.
