God, I wish the other night had a little but of this old steel.

Bort - 2008-10-04

That was a different era, when it was expected that competence was a trait to be valued on a Republican ticket. We have since fallen to a point where the daily news reads like satire written by an angry know-it-all teenager.

Don't be dense, Bort, Reagan killed the idea of "competence as a trait to be valued" by Republicans 8 years before that.

Sounds like pro wrestling

Cena_mark - 2008-10-04

That guy who nobody knows about may have sounded all cool that night, but he didn't become vice president.

Desidiosus - 2008-10-04

He didn't have to. Bentsen fucked Dan Quayle up so much that he forgot how to spell forever afterwards.

baleen - 2008-10-04

This is actually one of the turning points in Quayle's career, and is probably one of the most painful zingers in history. Republicans appeased one another by paraphrasing this quote into the 90's EVERY SINGLE TIME a Democrat mentioned a politician from some other time. Quayle's response to it was notably unheroic.

Cena_mark - 2008-10-04

This year will be different from 1988. The ticket with the brilliant VP will win, as opposed to 1988 with the buffoon VP. Yes McCain Palin will come out victorious.

Desidiosus - 2008-10-04

That's trolling we can believe in!

Ursa_minor - 2008-10-04

Right on time, Cena

ztc - 2008-10-04

I've never heard of Lloyd Bentsen before now, but I know I want to elect him to something.

Since Don LaFontaine's dead, couldn't we - oh, right.

Cena_mark - 2008-10-04

Bentsen is dead.

fourthguy - 2008-10-04

Yeah, Dan Quayle. That guy was dumb.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-04

On the other hand, Quayle was actually able to answer the questions asked, was allowed to speak on his own to reporters, and had actual experience in foreign policy and national governance.

So, could be worse.

Chip - 2008-10-04

I remember Bentsen's line being replayed on the news at the time, but I hadn't heard Quayle's lame, lame rebuttal before now. Priceless.

Hugo Gorilla - 2008-10-04

If Gary Hart didn't have an appetite for fellacious bimbos, we wouldn't have seen this brilliant barb.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-04

But I have sperience.
