Reading about this period in British history, I can only imagine the forces at work in the greatest creative episode since the early sixties, and arguably earlier. Widespread unemployment, riots in the streets, bodies left unburied, and the strong expectation that their lives would be forshortened by some US-American nuclear confrontation. It was truly the best of times.
