I wish Obama would fucking grow a pair already and do a better job at defending himself.
|
|
IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-10 Besides, in an interview Obama suggested McCain doesn't have the guts to say the charge do his face, and his campaign has basically dared McCain to mention it in the debate. So I don't think its a matter of guts.

baleen - 2008-10-10
If you are ahead in the polls, you don't attack. Besides he's just bought 30 minutes of air time on CBS at 8pm (cost about a million). You can be sure there will be plenty of attacks there. It will air a week before D-Day.
|
Desidiosus - 2008-10-10 I doubt he'll use that half hour to attack McCain. More likely he'll give a biography of himself, make it positive and uplifting, and seal the deal there and then. Clinton did that back in 1992 and it worked perfectly.
|
baleen - 2008-10-10
Maybe... I bet they have two documentaries ready, the uplifting one if he's still way up in the polls or the brutal one if somehow McCain's scare tactics put him on an even keel.
|
IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-10 They've already hinted that its about the economy.
|
Desidiosus - 2008-10-10 Yeah, I doubt they'll need to use the brutal one. There's only three weeks left, the negative bullshit isn't winning anyone over who isn't already in the tank for McCain, so Obama can afford to take the high road.

spencer - 2008-10-10
So, wait... and I know the majority of people on here are Obama-Biden supporters... but does any of this stuff not raise a few questions amongst you?
|
Udderdude - 2008-10-10 It's allready been debunked.
|
Udderdude - 2008-10-10 In addition, McCain's campaign is tossing out so much mud at this point they've got more of it on themselves than anyone else.

|
IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-10 Yes it does. (Surprise!)
Not new ones, as all these facts were known ages ago, and dismissed by McCain (back then) as irrelevant. But I do think Senator Obama exercised poor judgment in not condemning his actions sooner. Sitting on an education board with him is no problem, but appearing at his house when canvassing for votes was.
Then again, the lead prosecutor of the Weathermen disagrees with me, so who knows.

For the record, I'm Canadian, but would be voting Obama-Biden if I were a US citizen. The Jeremiah Wright debacle didn't phase me, but this... I find questionable.
Let's just forget about where the mud is being slung from for a second. I've been paying attention, and I'm just not totally satisfied with Obama's explanation. It seems more like downplaying than debunking. Obama pointed out a few times that the weather underground shit went down when he was eight, but, still, Ayers is admittedly unrepentant.
It just seems strange that a man with aspirations for the highest office in the country would form such ties with a man like Ayers.

dreamvigile - 2008-10-10 From what I understand, Ayers became such a big figure in Chicago politics that everyone was working with him. They make it sound like it was just Obama and Ayers scheming in some volcano fortress of doom, but it was actually lots of people *from both sides of the aisle*.
|
IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-10 I agree to an extent. But keep in mind that at this time Ayers was considered a reformed do-gooder with key positions in Chicago government relating to poverty and education, and endorsed and befriended by Republicans and Democrats alike.
That committee they served on together was put together by one of McCain's strongest supporters, a man whose endorsement McCain trumpets in press releases. Ayers is strongly defended today by most Chicago politicians who've worked with him. Not because of what he did, but who he is now.
|
Johnny Roastbeef - 2008-10-10 Not to mention that he's a distinguished professor at a prestigious university. The university doesn't seem to mind being associated with an alleged terrorist.
OMG MUSLIM EXTREMISTS TEACHING OUR KIDS WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT?!?
|
spencer - 2008-10-10
That makes sense, dreamvigile, and is most probably the case. Obama just seems to be ignoring the more potent aspects of the allegations... like, having met at Ayers' house at the infancy of his political career (I don't know how true it is to say he "launched" it there, as this video suggests).
Ah, I don't know. My problem is more with the fact that Obama hasn't completely and thoroughly debunked this yet. The allegations themselves have simple explanations. You've just demonstrated this. Why, then, won't Obama explain anything beyond the fact that he was eight in 1969, and that their relationship didn't go beyond the education reform board.

spencer - 2008-10-10 shit, i don't mean to keep making each reply a new thread.

citrusmirakel - 2008-10-10 I'm not him, but I'd think it's because the campaign feels it irrelevant. If you're actually willing to buy into the idea that a candidate is, in fact, a proud member of the Let's Blow America Up Party, then it's not really going to be possible for him to walk you back from that ledge. People simply curious about the allogation can learn what's behind it, if they so choose, but actually spending your time talking down their issues is not adventageous is not actually helpful unless the issue at hand is really damaging to your campaign.
And, from what I understand, the Ayers thing really only resonates with the Obama=Osama crowd, and isn't really hurting his campaign none. I'd imagine the Obama campaign would prefer McCain spend more time and money into tactics that aren't proving out.
|
citrusmirakel - 2008-10-10 That said though, I really would like to see Obama deliver a strong public message denouncing negative campaigning as a whole. If for no other reason than to underline to political minded people that the nastiest campaign doesn't always get the upper hand.
|
Meerkat - 2008-10-10 He doesn't need to debunk it, since the New York Times already did. The facts are these:
1. Ayers did his thing when Obama was 8 years old.
2. Obama got on the board of a non-profit charitable organization, because he likes that sort of crap.
3. By this time, Ayers, who had not been convicted of anything, was also on the board of this self-same charitable organization.
4. Obama was not aware of the thing Ayers had done when Obama was 8 years old.
FACT: This is like going to help out at Habitat for Humanity and carrying 2x4's with some guy named Jimmy Carter, and then later you're being attacked for your associations with Jimmy Carter who is history's greatest monster.
ANOTHER FACT: I did actually carry 2x4's with Jimmy Carter while helping out at Habitat for Humanity, so that's kind of funny.
