Newt Gingrinch is the failed model of conservative intellectuals. Is this what people at the American Enterprise Institute do all day? Sit around whining about teens watching television?

Rovin - 2008-10-23

They're thinking that all that rhetoric about closing the borders will have to be brought about eventually if they want to retain any sort of power, so they'll have to have replacement labor. Might as well be YOUR kid!

IrishWhiskey - 2008-10-23

He thinks if we classify teenagers as adults, they'll have less sex? What? By the way, any chance you are going to use this to support lowering the voting age? No? Consider me totally surprised at the disdain for education, by the way.

All you need to know about this guy is:
He said today that Tina Fey should be sued for slander based on her performances as Palin, and he's one of the GOP frontrunners for 2012.

baleen - 2008-10-23

Also, Newt Gingrich was having an affair while he was trying to crucify Clinton for the blowjobs in the whitehouse. The man is a cunt.

Nithing - 2009-01-26

No these are social conservative speds. Real neo-cons are thinking about invading Iran full time.

buttnutt - 2008-10-23

I'd like to see how that idea pans out. Especially considering how american teenagers these days are a bunch of psychopaths.

Rovin - 2008-10-23

Wha...

The kids today are watching junk television, doing drugs, and having sex?

Isn't... isn't that what most adults do in one fashion or another?

Why would you try to stop kids from doing the things adults do anyway?

!

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-10-23

I hope you realize that your plan will inevitably lead to a lower age of consent.

plaid_knight - 2008-10-23

I think that's his goal.

wtf japan - 2008-10-23

His argument's kind of elegant when you think about it that way.

Squidmojo - 2008-10-23

His plan seems to be entirely ignorant of the actual brain physiology of children and teens.

Randroid - 2008-10-23

well, according to the bible,

fatatty - 2008-10-23

I have to admit I agree with Newt for maybe the first time ever. I don't think that sitting around watching TV has caused the end of productive teenagers but it is a factor. And I think treating them like children for such prolonged periods is detrimental to their development. "I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys R Us kid" should be a scary anthem to drill into kids brains. At least I feel like it was for me and a lot of people I know.

I left high school still feeling like a kid under the control of the adults around me. I left college feeling more in my own and feeling like an adult but I think I would have been better served by an earlier start. Was that my fault? Was that my parents/teachers? Was that pop culture? Was that our adolescent cultural model?

I think our society would be better served with adults leaving high school ready to enter society and begin pursuing their adult life. And if they can do it sooner we should help them do it through scholarships. Sounds good to me.

We are falling behind India and China in science, math and engineering. Mostly because those kids realize what an asset education really is and how it can help them achieve what their parents could not. We've become lazy and many of our kids don't feel the need to surpass their parents and gain a better life because their life is already pretty good. They see education as a chore and not as a gift.

We're complacent and getting surpassed by the rest of the world in a lot of important ways. Maybe this isn't the solution, or is only a part of a solution, but it's a conversation we need to have.

Aelric - 2008-10-23

I, too, kinda agree with him. Not for the same reasons he cites, however, and certainly not an everything he said. I do like the idea that if you can learn faster and do better in school, you get rewarded proportionally and that perhaps teenagers should not be so coddled until the age of 18. When I left the nest at the tender age of 16, it felt daunting at first, but I quickly learned and became more capable of taking care of myself and becoming far more responsible very quickly. When I got my shit together and got into college, it was far more of a breeze, although I must admit I suffered in my social scene since I felt like I was surrounded by children. Now that I'm out of college, I immediately got a great job by taking the right steps while folks I know who graduated years before me and are just as capable are back at their folks place or grinding at some horrible job they hate.

Now, I don't think there is anything wrong with spending your teenage years smoking, watching shows and fucking, hell it's how I spent them (and how I still largely spend my time), albeit out of my folks place, so fuck Newt's moral outrage. Also, 13 is ridiculously young. I think 16 is about where it should be, give or take a year on a case by case basis. It'll never happen, though, so fuck it, baywatch reruns are on.

craptacular - 2008-10-23

he has a good point, however, the point he's making has been brought up many times throughout the years. north american schooling definitely strives to bring about natural leaders among the students, while instilling boredom and suppressing creativity in the rest. simply offering scholarships to those that work hard isn't enough.
montessori schools teach kindergarten-aged kids multiplication and division. those mathematic principles are taught in grade 3 in our regular schools. schools should be redesigned to give different styles of teaching (since not everyone learns by ear), more challenging principles and fundamentals should be taught much earlier, and arts funding should be drastically boosted.

but you won't get that from mccain!

Frank Rizzo - 2008-10-23

"psha... this like reaks of effort man"

Sudan no1 - 2008-10-23

Child soldiers and child laborers were awesome. I wish to go back to those better days.

Also this is pretty rich coming from a guy obsessed with splatter movies.

Enjoy - 2008-10-23

The is probably the best video ever posted on this site. Newt points out the obvious. So obvious that the left will never understand it.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-23

It's not his message we disagree with, it's his agenda. And yours. And theirs. And this nation is on the downturn anyway, so yeah, fuck TV, fuck modern education, we need ta' be learnin' our younginfolk how ta' make bullets, just like the Afghans.

I hope your property becomes a victim of arson, you self-satisfied rich white trash.

Enjoy - 2008-10-23

See I figured you wouldn't understand his message. He wouldn't want anyone making bullets like Afghans. He's advocating a coming of age between childhood and young adults.

The problem with the boring adolecence is it leaves you in the state you are at jlzrd. You have your goatee (I'm a man) and your baseball cap (I'm a boy) all at the same time. You haven't been able to launch yourself as a functional adult but remain trapped in your Super Nintendo and Red Bull life. You still get a chuckle out of those teen targeted beer advertisements and you like to blame everyone, especially your mom, for your failings.

Camonk - 2008-10-23

This isn't a very conservative idea, since this would be a nationwide agenda, where the federal government is giving money to students for graduating early.

Note that it in no ways guarantees that they'll become successful after they graduate. It just gives them money to graduate earlier. If only there were some studies out there about students who graduated earlier... I wonder if any students who shouldn't try to graduate early would do so for the incentives he's putting out there. Oh, no, probably not. Teenagers are so responsible, after all.

It may not be a horrible idea. There are definitely huge problems with our high school systems. But jesus Enjoy I could juggle what you know about education. So shut up about it.

thirteen3seven - 2008-10-23

Four stars for the video, and a fifth for you, Enjoy, because your smugness.

Anyway, yay education reform. Boo a clear demonstration of idiot black-and-white thinking that betrays an utter lack of foresight into the implications of such a plan.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-10-23

Hey, Donut-Machine Dumbo. You, in the convertable with roll-bars, is "Yo mamma" all you can really come back with, you ludicrous mockery of success? Is changing the tracks on the conversation train going to totally prevent the imminent collision of what I said, against the words you put in my mouth and face you drew on my Internet Name™?

I take back what I said about your property. I honestly, fervently wish that it would be you and everything your eyes have ever seen that becomes a victim of arson. You're such a piece of shit, Enjoy, and we all keep telling you, and you keep singing "LALALALA LA LA LALALALA!!!"

baleen - 2008-10-23

Of course Newt has a point, unfortunately it's corrupted by the fact that he is Newt Gingrich, and everything he does is wrong.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-10-24

5 stars for your random stereotype.

TeenerTot - 2008-10-23

He brings up an interesting point, but how to change it?
In the schools? Not all kids will learn in the same way at the same pace. So do the "slow" kids get left in the dust while the lessons are taught for the benefit of the "accelerated" kids? Or do the "smart" kids get forced to learn at the "slow" kids' pace? Or maybe Newt knows of an infinite source of funds so each kid can have an individual teacher, and learn at the exact pace that optimizes their talents?

Or maybe it's not a "problem" at all, but just retroactive jealousy on the part of the old-timers.

citrusmirakel - 2008-10-23

"And the other problem with adolescence is that kids keep making fun of you because your name is Newt, and you're kind of fat and socially awkward, so girls totally pretend like they like you, except they don't like you at all, they're just pretending to flirt with you because they think it's fucking funny or something, so then you grow an unhealthy opinion of what women are like, which negatively impacts every personal relationship you have with women in the future, and all the while you're dreaming... just agressively dreaming... of that one day when you can rise to power and fuck over the lives of all of those who hurt you in the past...

Is why we should... school reform, I think?"

frau_eva - 2008-10-23

I don't care how good or bad of an idea it is. When the only reference of note you cite is a sports psychologist, you fail. My methodologies, let me show you them.

Wayne McKinney - 2009-04-23

Newt Gingrich is downright scary. And the right is supposedly afraid of the left getting power? I fear the likes of Newt 1000 times more than I fear any excesses of the left.
