futurebot - 2008-11-15

Don't bother watching anything before 3:28ish.

citrusmirakel - 2008-11-15

Took your advice.
It was boring after that too.

Adramelech - 2008-11-15

When did games become like this.

Cleaner82 - 2008-11-15

Whenever it was people swelled to the size of planetoids inflated by pure ENTITLEMENT.

DMKA - 2008-11-15

When gaming transformed from something done in one's free time to a fucking lifestyle.

Desidiosus - 2008-11-16

When people started sinking real money into playing the damn things.

I used to play MUDs a lot back in the 90's and people would still get royally pissy even though all they lost was time spent on their characters.

Still, I don't ever remember hearing axe murder threats.

Eve has a terribly steep learning curve, and in-game losses are permanent. Some idiots think they can skip the grind like in WoW, so they sink 0 into a character, and stuff like this happens. That or they sink 200 hours into mining space rocks, then wander into a pvp area, and stuff like this happens.

But like any MMORPG, it's worthless unless you're having fun and not giving a shit what you win or lose.

Is that Jon Benjamin?

Ancient clip. Yahtzee's Zero Punctuation piece is spot on for the newb experience.

FWIW, I played EVE for 6 months, and it has so much promise and such poor execution. The idea of a single persistent server, in which your actions as an individual can influence the history of an alternate universe, is brilliant. What Yahtzee didn't tell you is that even if you want space opera on the grand scale, and join a grand alliance, the server hardware/code scales so poorly that any potentially decisive battle becomes a slideshow in which players load the local space 20 minutes after they jump in, and are informed they have fired weapons or died perhaps 30 minutes after the event. For individuals, there's little benefit to skill or focus.

Can't rate, because I'm bitter about a lot of wasted time. I check in once every few months to determine if the server-side infrastructure works any better.

Eve has a few great ideas that the other MORPGs don't have, unfortunately it lacks what makes other MORPGs fun.

I played it for 2 years, but the last year I only stuck with it because Goonswarm was hilarious. Small gang pvp can be a ton of fun, but even if you find a good corp, arms races mean you'll probably end up in grueling, horribly laggy fleet battles eventually.

The best thing about Eve is that it gives Lolbertarians a chance to see how a truly free market system fails spectacularly when facing religious fanatics, Russian hordes, or its own greed.

I'll check back on Eve every year or so to see if they fixed their problems, even when my character was high-level I only had fun flying suicide frigates.

I can't help it, I just love fat mmorpg fuckers crying about getting griefed. Makes me feel good.

StanleyPain - 2008-11-16

What makes this clip great is that he didn't even get griefed. Dumbass was in a PvP server and got pissed because someone dared actually shoot him down.

Godard's Drinking Problem - 2008-11-16

And from this, I'm made even more glad that I occasionally have sex with women.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-11-16

You would never hear this kind of filth in a Team Fortress 2 game.

KnowFuture - 2008-11-16

I feel slightly better about my WOW association/addiction/et. now.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2008-11-16

Dupe, but oh man, I love this clip.

Rudy - 2008-11-17
