Way to get out the jams Briton.

I found the professional pianist useless. The entire reason this is cool is one person can make a decent song with out doing anything significant or any practice. And all he did was go apeshit on the the one side he knew how to play.

Desidiosus - 2008-11-23

I could have sworn the pianist was going to play Yakety Sax when he started up. Oh well.

This video encapsulates everything I associate with swingin' 60's England, pretty much, right down to the neatly folded handkerchiefs in the blazer pockets.

The people who invent these things never seem to know what actual musicians will do with them.

I had one of these until shortly after high school when it started an electrical fire. I miss it and I own the Mellotron sound package for Reason, because that is the greatest fucking organ sound to ever be produced anwhere. Unfortunately, it does not include that awesome fuzzed out guitar.
I thought I was the only person using one of these until I saw Stereolab in concert way back when and had a nerdgasm because they had one on stage with them. Theirs did not commit ritual seppuku in the middle of a gig either.

So, thank you for my blissful nostalgia wave.

Holy shit sir, do you have any do tapes? It's no chore finding mellotron music but it's extra special when it's a PoE almuni making it.

What gets me about the mellotron is the beautiful engineering behind it. A bank of tape loops on springs, one play head per loop... the perfect analogue sample and hold. The kinda thing that will still be used occasionally in 100 years just for its sheer baroque historical genius of it.

Oh, I don't suppose you have video of your mellotron going critical mid-concert? Because that would be totally metal.

kingarthur - 2008-11-23

I don't have any tapes of me using the old mellotron. Several moves, a killer hurricane and ex-girlfriends have destroyed those. I do have a very newborn reverbnation page with a song on it using the Reason mellotron software. It's called "Not Tricky Enough" though I use the organ sound fairly often. I'm at www.reverbnation.com/kingarthurexperience

And no, video of my old mellotron going brutal do not exist. :(

Where I live in Calgary there's a museum called Cantos.

It's dedicated to all things keyboard and electronic keyboard related - it's also the largest collection in the world.

Also, Mellotron was bought by a well to do oil business man in Calgary. He has all the old NOS parts and is still making them.

Waltzes and two-steps are fine, old chap, but I say, could one use this device for skiffle?

kingarthur - 2008-11-23

I used this thing in combination with a Yamaha PSR520 and RY8 drum machine. I was all over with the crazy sounds.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-11-23

EET'S A MUSICAL COMPUTAAAAH!

Raggamuffin - 2010-02-21

WOTS A COMPUTAH?

Syd Midnight - 2008-11-23

Oh, not to be a skeptic, but I must point out that "thumbs" were not considered "fingers" in his paradigm.. I feel cheated somewhat.

fluffy - 2008-11-23

I've often wanted an Optigan, which is pretty much the same principle except everything's on a single optical disc instead of being recorded on a bunch of separate tapes.

HEY. what was the lady on the rooster at the end.

HankFinch - 2008-11-24

And that's how babies are made.

Big Beef Burritos Supreme - 2008-11-24

Fantastic. 60s England could easily be summed up with flock wallpaper, being the campest thing in the world without actually admitting to being gay, and this: the soundtrack to every spy movie and Indian restaurant of the era.
