CornOnTheCabre - 2008-12-01

What exactly is a speculative biologist? Is that like a fictional historian?

baleen - 2008-12-01

heeheeheee

baleen - 2008-12-01

Some of my ancestors share his surname and are from austria. I wonder if I'm related to this guy.

CornOnTheCabre - 2008-12-01

the amount of differences between you and him are numerous. ive personally tried to do the calculations myself (they are very easy) and I stopped at 6,000.

Aelric - 2008-12-01

Mrs. Dr. baleen Berlinski. Guess I kinda like it.

baleen - 2008-12-01

strange, according to my calculations i don't exist.
that explains some things.

socialist_hentai - 2008-12-01

they've learned how to imitate the smugness of our scientists. They're.... Evolving...

Randroid - 2008-12-01

There are legions of them, waiting in the tombs that honeycomb the plateau of Patriot Bible University.

SolRo - 2008-12-01

short version for you lazy people;

Math guy says whales evolving is too complex for him, thus evolution is impossible.

CornOnTheCabre - 2008-12-01

also, a bunch of scientists agree with him, just no scientists that actually work in the field of biology, genetics or anything ostensibly related to evolution

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-12-01

In one form or another, this is pretty much the same argument opponents to evolution have been making since the theory was published.

SolRo - 2008-12-01

BUT HE KNOWS MATH! HE MUST BE RIGHT!!

Knuckles - 2008-12-01

Youtube description follows

WARNING
This one will really, really, really damage the Darwinist. Even the most brainwashed of Darwin fanboys will be scratching their head after watching this video. Dr. David Berlinski is one of the worlds most brilliant minds who also happens to be one of the coolest scientists around. He's The Fonz of science. He has Ivy League degrees in both mathematics and micro-biology, thus his opinion should be one of the world's most valued when it comes to evolution.

DARWINISTS PWNED
"But lots and lots of people are skeptical in the scientific community. I know dozens of mathematicians who scratch their heads and say "You guys think this is the way life originated?!?! It's absolutely a preposterous theory." And many many significant figures, John von Neumann, one of the great mathematicians of the 20th century, just laughed at Darwinian theory. He hooted at it."

Ratings were open, and my viewers declared this video another 5-star classic. I've since closed them.

Please learn some respect.

Fifth star is for your outstanding observations.

positively - 2008-12-01

In responding to Berlinski's arguments, marine biologist Wesley R. Elsberry comments: "I personally like my 'at onces' to refer to events significantly shorter than ten million years."

glendower - 2008-12-01

Come on, the guy is presenting a good argument. What's irritating is the dogmatism on both sides of this debate. People from each side outright dismiss good arguments presented by the other.

Camonk - 2008-12-01

If a biologist went around claiming that the universe being huge, or whatever, is mathematically impossible simply because he didn't understand the theories involved, he'd be laughed at.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-12-01

Fuck you, glendower.

minimalist - 2008-12-01

Curse those scientists for being so dogmatic about quote-mining, arguments from incredulity, arguments from authority, outright lies, and combinations of all three (Berlinski has never substantiated the von Neumann claim).

phalsebob - 2008-12-01

What argument is he presenting? Among all the arrogant blah blah all I hear is a) evolution is to complicated to work and b) where are the intermediary species. Both are standard creationists attacks and are weak as all fuck.

dancingshadow - 2008-12-01

Surely you can see how different a car and a sumbarine are. Right?... right ?! CASE CLOSED !!

StanleyPain - 2008-12-01

He's not remotely presenting a good argument AT ALL. Why?

Well, because his whole approach is based on the neo-Christian/Creationist bullshit meme that evolutionary science says that "COWS CAME FROM WHALES.", which it doesn't, and certainly not in such a retarded, simplistic way. It's like the thing where they try to disprove evolution by attacking "LOL DINOSAURS TURNED INTO CHICKENZ, WUT?" thing, again despite the fact that what they're actually talking about is infinitely more complex (and not even agreed upon) than some stupid X=Y thing.

The reason they have to continue to pass those memes off as stuff that actually exist and lie to people is that it makes it easier to push their bullshit non-science onto people and also helps to sidestep the issue that in actual evolutionary science there are complex and detail transitional stages of almost any creature. Denying the existence of transitional stages is the entire core of creationism's survival, because by erasing that aspect of the science, they can easily convince people of things that are outright lies about the actual facts.

So, in essence, what this guy is doing is using bullshit science to debunk a bullshit theory that most average people don't know is bullshit and not actually evolution or Darwinism because they're too ignorant and/or lazy to take a few minutes to actually read a summary of it.

commandocucumber - 2009-01-04

well said stanley.

sparklefatty - 2008-12-01

But you're not changing a cow into a whale. When animals evolved, they started from scratch. They evolved from scratch to fill the niches available. They even evolved wings.

YakooMarkTwo - 2008-12-01

I am willing to believe that a cow can't become a whale through... well, I don't know what forces he supposes would be attempting this change... but I will believe that, yes.

AgentOrange - 2008-12-01

Four new idiots in this comments section.

chumbucket - 2008-12-01

he uses big words, moves his hands and rolls his eyes...he must be right

hmmm but what bugs me is that he doesn't have shelves of books behind him...like other intellectuals. That bothers me, it bothers and vexes me.

Goethe and ernie - 2008-12-01

Ah, some smug cunt who has nothing to do with evolution explains why a made-up version of evolution is mathematically impossible based on his own cunty calculations. Well colour me converted, I just can't believe in the lie anymore.

waxeater - 2008-12-01

This guy's clearly never run afoul of the dreaded COWHALE.

Zoot42 - 2008-12-01

Manatee.

OxygenThief - 2008-12-02

Dugong.

kingofthenothing - 2009-02-08

He has clearly never been to the Outback and run afoul of their might giants, the IS, or the Airwhale.

sunisevil - 2008-12-01

I don't even want to try to be clever here. That guy is an ignorant dick. I don't know how to do stars for such a bastard.

blase - 2008-12-01

If I wanted to see a strawman fancy dancy, I'd be watching "The Wizard of Oz"

erection reset by queer - 2008-12-01

"Don't forget: these changes are not independent, they are all linked"

That might be a clue for you, Dr. David Berlinski.

Jackass.

takewithfood - 2008-12-01

He wants us to believe that he actually counted 50,000 necessary morphological changes from cow > whale?

"49,998, 49,999... ah hell, one more. 50,000! I think I'll stop there."

And is his argument that there wasn't enough time, or that lots of stuff can't possibly happen simply by virtue of it being too much stuff?

CornOnTheCabre - 2008-12-02

MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGE #38,700: WHALES DONT TASTE AS GOOD WITH BARBEQUE SAUCE
MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGE #38,701: THERE ARE FEWER TRAINED WHALE ANIMAL ACTORS THAN TRAINED COW ACTORS
MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGE #38,702: LACK OF MOOING
MORPHOLOGICAL CHANGE #38,703: ARMBAR

oogaBooga - 2008-12-02

I read one of those as MOO-OLOGICAL. insta 5

TypicalEllisProtagonist - 2009-03-16

That "ARMBAR" joke is a full-on one-percenter. I laughed.

DerangedGoblin - 2008-12-01

I'm surprised at how dickish everyone here is being. This man is making a valid point, I think his one flaw is not turning it around on Christianity. He logic doesn't prove anything right is the problem. He has successfully disproved evolution, but has failed to give an alternative.

Here, let me explain.
Christianity does not work because goats did not become domesticated until 9000 BCE, and therefore could not have created the Earth. I have done the calculations. Dr. Tishfo Lluf once said to a room full of Christians, "You believe this?!" He hooted!

You see? This man is a genius.

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-12-01

We're being DICKISH because these shits have had their ignorance validated for the past eight years for no reason other than their votes.

lordpotato - 2008-12-01

I actually didn't see any good point being made. Glad I saw it though.

Baby Finster - 2008-12-01

The man does not have a point. His argument is "I can't understand how this happened, therefore it's impossible." His own failure of imagination does not constitute evidence.

takewithfood - 2008-12-01

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_ignorance

DerangedGoblin - 2008-12-02

It... it was sarcasm... hence the... the goat thing... I was making fun of him mocking evolution and then disproving that cows could become whales when that's not evolution...

Like how my point was that a goat can't create the universe so Christianity can't be true... I'm on your side...

I should just stop commenting...

Keefu - 2008-12-08

We're such dicks we don't comprehend sarcasm.

charmlessman - 2008-12-01

Um, is it really accepted that whales' ancestors came from the land? Isn't it more plausible that whales came first, then they moved to the land and became cows, where the only thing they'd really need to evolve right away were legs?

dr_mr_vandertramps - 2008-12-01

i am under the impression that land animals came before cetaceans. This is what The Internet has told me, don't ruin my illusions.

charmlessman - 2008-12-01

Whadaya know!
Not only does it turn out you're right, but the evolutionary path of whales from land mammals (NOT COWS) to sea mammals is very well understood!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_evolution

Take that, pretend science!!

oogaBooga - 2008-12-02

While id love to agree, can you perhaps quote something that isnt wikipedia?

charmlessman - 2008-12-02

How about every citation and link at the bottom of that Wikipedia page?
Come on, dude, do you seriously think the "Darwinism Conspiracy" is so deep that people forge entire Wikipedia pages to keep the myth up?

fermun - 2008-12-01

This guy would probably shit his pants if he found out that elephants are excellent swimmers.

Banal Intercourse - 2009-01-22

Elephants and manatees are linked in the current Taxology. That is to say: enough biologists believe that some predecessor to the modern elephant went swimming one day, never came out of the water when his brothers did, and is now the Sea Cow.

Side Poll: would this guy have been a better choice than Malkovich for "Being John Malkovich"?

fluffy - 2008-12-02

one star for every FARRRRRRRRRRT

William Batty - 2008-12-14

This is bullshit, because I transformed a cow into a whale using only a hacksaw and a gallon bucket of rubber cement, and it only took like 20 steps.

Shotgun Jackson - 2008-12-15

Hey Darwin this Math teacher wants you to show your work... You can't just give the answer... Where is the formula smart guy? Seriously... I agree with most of you. Just because there is no project plan doesn't mean it's not true. Evolution is the most logical explanation.

bopeton - 2009-02-08

There are 1440 minutes in a day, 380 in eight hours. Assuming he came up with one morphological change per minute, and works eight hour days at thinking up differences between cows and whales, he spent 131 days just thinking of differences between cows and whales. Assuming he didn't do it on the weekends, he spent roughly 180 days counting this. Half a year doing absolutely nothing at work but imagining differences between cows and whales.

If he's a mathematician, he should've been able to come up with a more reasonable lie.

Syd Midnight - 2009-12-21

From the title I was expecting the Tim and Eric Show.
