Oh my.

snothouse - 2008-12-11

We're officially back to the "Fox and Hound" years.

bac - 2008-12-11

I don't remember Tod being a crack toothed ghetto-billy, and I'm positive Copper wasn't a princess or a toad.

Your statement lacks merit.

snothouse - 2008-12-11

Okay, do you remember being totally bored and depressed by Disney animation? How about that?

Spastic Avenger - 2009-05-11

I remember there being a cumshot in that film. Looks like no cumshots this time round.

HarrietTubmanPI - 2008-12-11

What did I just see?

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-11-29

SHUCKIN AN JIVIN SHUCKIN AN JIVIN AH YESSAH DAZA TROOF

zatojones - 2008-12-11

i bet "The Princess and the Frog 2" is out on DVD within six months of the theatrical release

GiantAtomicFreak - 2008-12-11

Coming soon from the Disney Vault!

I've Never Seen an Elephant Fly, What makes the Red Man Red?, and I Wanna Be Like You-oo-oo as sung by the surviving cast of Song of the South.

Merzbau - 2008-12-11

God dammit Disney now I have "Crackity Jones" stuck in my head and it is ALL YOUR FAULT

kennydra - 2008-12-11

what. the. fuck.

RomancingTrain - 2008-12-11

Dis sho am a catchy title.

boner - 2008-12-11

You are a bunch of cynical motherfuckers

fatatty - 2008-12-11

If anyone deserves a cynical view, it's Disney.

Jeff Fries - 2008-12-11

You know they froze him in uniform

Hooper_X - 2008-12-11

It is a testament to the excellence of Disney's marketing department character designers that I had no idea the titular princess was supposed to be black until the internet told me otherwise.

waxeater - 2008-12-11

I suppose that this is their way of finally suckering black people into buying some of that awful Disney Princess horseshit.

Dr. Venkman - 2008-12-11

outside of the obvious of this video, i think im more shocked that disney is using 2D animation. i thought they said after their acquisition of pixar that they'd stop 2D animation.

fatatty - 2008-12-11

They did drop their 2D art departments but their management really has no idea what they're doing other than making money. They just noticed that Pixar's films were selling better so they realized that obviously that meant it was because they were 3D. So they fired all their 2D artists that couldn't transition to 3D and sold all their 2D equipment and switched over to full CG. (This was a big deal when I was going to art school, since half my class wanted to go into 2D after graduation, and this seemed like a death knell to 2D animation.)

So then of course when their 3D films didn't sell either they were completely confused and I guess decided to go back to making 2D princess cartoons again (and probably begged many of their better 2D artists who had left and started their own companies to come back). Somehow completely missing the fact that Pixar has yet to make a princess film and in fact sells tickets because they write amazing stories and talk to their audience instead of down to them.

But they know marketing and so you have a black (but not too black) princess and frog who can now be made into millions of toys to sell to children to make up for the lack of money they'll make off actual tickets and DVDs to their mediocre, over tested, over marketed, overly safe glorified toy commercial.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-12-11

I completely appreciate your notes here, but if Pixar's so great why did the Incredibles slip through as a thinly veiled Randroid screed?

fluffy - 2008-12-11

Also, fatatty, it's pretty interesting how Pixar has dabbled in some 2D as of late (such as their Ratatouille "Our Friend, The Rat" short) and it still comes across as far better traditional 2D animation than anything Disney's done in the past 10 years.

Lasseter was one of the early pioneers of using computer graphics as a new tool for traditional animation, rather than being a thing unto itself. His formative paper in the early days of SIGGRAPH (which basically showed the basics of 2D animation and a brief history of how they came to be, and then showed how to apply that to 3D) is something that all animators (2D and 3D alike) should still read today, and sadly, most don't.

Unfortunately, the ACM keeps it under lock and key and charges money for reading it, which is a big part of why. Every now and then, illicit copies of it pop up on the web but in the meantime all you can really do is read the abstract at http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=37407 unless you happen to be an ACM member.

fatatty - 2008-12-11

CD: Yes the line "If everyone's special, no one is" could very well come out of Rand's mouth, and probably did, but I don't think you can really throw the rest of the film in the waste basket because of its philosophy. There's a lot to that film that makes it great, and better than most any Disney film. Characters (complex and well developed), realistic and adult dialogue, complex views of family life, work ethics, life ethics, etc.

Maybe the core theme of the film is "Randroidian" but at least it's an interesting concept for kids to think about in an abstract way. It's better than the usual believe in yourself and save the princess isn't it?

fluffy: Thanks for the heads up. I'll check it out. And yeah, I'd love to see Pixar move into 2D or Live action, if only to prove that they're not successful because they have a CG gimmick.

sosage - 2008-12-11

I was also in art school when that happened...and yeah...it was depressing. It made an already difficult career choice seem impossible for a lot of 2D animation students.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-12-11

I'll see your defense of Pixar, Fatatty, and raise you Cars. Defend that.

fatatty - 2008-12-11

Cars? Ugh...well it gave Larry the Cable Guy a vehicle to jump start his movie career...and Lightning McQueen learned a valuable lesson about choosing friends over fortune and fame...

Hey Kubrick had his Eyes Wide Shut, Spielberg had his Indy 4 and Coppola had Godfather part III. Pixar's not flawless...Brad Bird is so far though.

sosage - 2008-12-11

Eyes Wide Shut is bad? I thought it was very Kubrick. As in very good.

cognitivedissonance - 2008-12-11

Brad Bird is the proverbial albatross around Pixar's neck. Dude needs to stop whining about how nobody "understood" Iron Giant and move on with his life.

joffe b - 2008-12-11

cars was made so they could finish their damn contract with Disney, back when they just wanted to get the fuck out of there. Nobody involved of any merit really believed in or cared about the project.

Thats what I tell myself.

But I don't tell myself that very often, because having ridiculously dorky opinions about Pixar or Brad Bird is pretty silly.

Dr. Venkman - 2008-12-12

personally i rather dig brad birds work, even the "Randroidian" the incredible's which i thought got the team/family of superheros concept right infinitely better than than tim"barbershop"storys fantastic four wankfests. let alone he did work on the simpsons during its golden age. that said i do think the iron giant is so-so, gorgeous 2d animation and inventive use of 3D, but story wise it goes back and fourth from entertaining to downright boring in some parts.

as for disney and 3D, if this is any indicator, i think disney is realizing they might have screwed the pooch when it came to abandoning there 2D animation department abit. though i do agree with another commentors post's, that while it is good to see a return to hand drawn roots, this shit looks fox and the hound, nay, fucking oliver and company bad.

p.s.
if i were cajun id be ten different kinds of pissed, as that firefly if its intended to have a cajun accent, comes across more as paint chip loving retarded than cajun.

Dr. Venkman - 2008-12-12

side note: dan whitneys cars is an under appreciated gem, and by gem i mean shit, and by under appreciated i mean bordering on forgotten.

Jeff Fries - 2008-12-12

Pixar 2D animation is all a bland a Mary Blair pastiche, and for some bonus pessimism, WALL-E proved that they can't tell a story with having one of the characters articulate the moral out loud.

Joey The Cobra - 2008-12-12

Well to be fair kids are pretty stupid, they need the moral explained to them.

dead_cat - 2008-12-13

Shit, I'd completely forgotten all about Oliver and Company. The only Disney movie I never wanted to see, even as an amazingly idiotic child.

fatatty - 2008-12-14

Brad Bird is the albatross that's won Oscars for both films he directed for them? Hey if Pixar doesn't want him he can hang around my neck any day.

Hooper_X - 2009-01-07

Cars was made entirely to sell dozens upon dozens of virtually identical but just-so-slightly repainted toy vehicles. I don't know who in the fuck is buying them, but there are pegs and pegs full of Cars merch in the Hot Wheels aisle at any toy store, and they seem to move at a reasonable clip.

The only person I've ever seen buying Cars toys was a reasonably attractive woman in her mid-late 20's. I don't know whether she was a fan of the movie or had a kid or what, but she seemed very very excited about it, to the point where she pointed out in the checkout lane that she'd been looking for... some dude or the other for a while now.

notascientist - 2009-08-15

I am Cajun, and that accent did not even register as anywhere near. I don't think it was what they were going for...

cognitivedissonance - 2008-12-11

The story gets even worse: in the original script, she was a maid named Maddie, *during slavery*, *to a white family*, *in happy-good-times-pre-Hurricane-Disney New Orleans*. John Lasseter came on board and apparently saw what was wrong but just because he's John Lasseter doesn't mean he can stop the marketing plan for the Black Disney Princess.

Camonk - 2008-12-11

Everyone knows that the definitive Princess and the Frog has already been done. Kermit was in it. Kermit's not in this, so it is going to be shit.

Billie_Joe_Buttfuck - 2008-12-11

Oh, for fuck's sake.

imairlax - 2008-12-11

five for offending even mr. buttfuck.

ten if at any point during the movie that firefly softshoes.

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-11-29

BJB is different from Billy Buttfuck

StanleyPain - 2008-12-11

Wait, wait....I thought the whole point of the scheme to get John Lasseter in as head of Disney Animation was to put an END to this fucking shit. I know there was projects already in the pipe he couldn't stop legally, but is this one of them? Jesus.....

DAT SHO LOOK LIKE SUM GOOD MOVIE MAKIN MASSAH!!

papa_november - 2008-12-11

Let's revive American 2D animation by making the EXACT SAME MOVIE that killed it dead in the first place!

chumbucket - 2008-12-11

madness, that's the only explanation, madness

Caminante Nocturno - 2008-12-11

Disney should no longer be.

eatenmyeyes - 2008-12-11

Don't give up hope of a Three Caballeros re-release .

j lzrd / swift idiot - 2009-11-29

Oh my fucking god the three caballeros was AAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMM MMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

charmlessman - 2008-12-11

Interspecies Erotica.

HEYYYYYYY!!!

mashedtater - 2009-01-18

Next it will be a furry princess.

just you wait

The Snickler - 2008-12-11

As a member of the community that this purports to be about (I am from New Orleans, not a frog or princess), I would point out that the firefly could be Coonass or Blackface. I for one cannot decide (perhaps its both).

zatojones - 2008-12-11

He sounds cajun to me

Spider Jerusalem - 2008-12-11

"Coonass" is a derogatory term for Cajun people.

Goethe and ernie - 2008-12-12

Oh, so it's not actually horribly racist? Two stars in that case

wtf japan - 2008-12-11

I know of several white people that sound exactly like the firefly. That is a Cajun accent. Their dentistry isn't all that great either. I'm not saying Disney isn't going to fuck this up royal, but I don't find the firefly inherently offensive.

DMKA - 2008-12-11

I can't wait for this movie. Fuck cgi.

themilkshark - 2008-12-11

holla

bopeton - 2008-12-11

I just hope he doesn't turn back into a man while she's dangling him over the balcony.

Chibisuke - 2008-12-11

Wow. After Bolt turned out to be pretty good, I'd hoped Disney was done with this shit. This looks worse than Home on the Range.

IrishWhiskey - 2008-12-11

In retrospect, 'Song of the South' wasn't all that bad.

joffe b - 2008-12-11

I actually just watched Song of the South for the first time, and the animation parts are fine and lovely, its just the damn syrupy sweet "rich white kid learns valuable lesson from simple, magic negro friends who don't have much book learning but sho do love dancin their troubles away" live action part. If they had made a fully animated Song of the South, then the only people to care would be the same people who still get horribly offended by the Jungle Book or Dumbo.

Corplos - 2008-12-11

I don't care, I want to see this.

themilkshark - 2008-12-11

I like drawings.

Midnight Man - 2008-12-11

I didn't think there was any way this could live down to the description and tags but holy fuck

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2008-12-12

They certainly have truly captured New Orleans in a non stereotypical manner!

Xenocide - 2008-12-12

I'm thrilled Disney is going back to 2-D animation, as they have never done a good 3-D film and probably never will.

However, this is just kind of embarrassing.

klingerbgoode - 2008-12-12

There was some controversy when the name of the heroine of the movie (who is of African American heritage) was announced as Maddy. The character's name was perceived by some as to be a stereotypical, lower-class, "slave name", and the character was also a maid working for a rich white person, which received complaints as being racially insensitive. It should be noted, though, that this setup is historically accurate as the movie is set before the American Civil Rights Movement started, and that many other Fairy taleDisney princesses have similar Cinderella, Snow White, and Rapunzel damsel in distress stories.

themilkshark - 2008-12-12

Yah people need to shut the fuck up and let Disney be as racially insensitive as they always have been.

blood_visions - 2008-12-31

i fail to see why anyone cares

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-03-16

Ignoring the crazy racist caricatures for a moment: I really do hope this movie is successful. We need a successful 2d animated film to reinvigorate interest in animation and hopefully bring it out of the slump of the past decade.

kingofthenothing - 2009-04-10

the fact that so many people seem to be taking this seriously makes this seem like some kind of joint-troll effort. Troll Coalition? I don't know.

It's a cartoon. File under 'who gives a crap?'

JaguarX - 2009-04-18

The firefly sold me when he said , "This sure Is here a catchy title right there". And you don't doubt a firefly with a broken New Orleans accent. That thery'll be awrong if theya do.
