Smooth jazz always has a place with apocalyptic destruction. It's like a rule or something.
Also: This is one of the very few examples of good anime.

boba. - 2008-12-23 apparently people who think there is such a thing as "good anime" can't tell the difference between country music and smooth jazz

Aelric - 2008-12-23 Ray Charles sings country? News to me.

Monchiles Monchiles - 2008-12-23 I only came for Caminante's post about this video. So this rating is for his post, not for the video itself, which I didn't watch at all.

boba. - 2008-12-23 this track is off of ray charles lp "modern sounds in country and western music", the first of two volumes. news to you. anime sucks.

Ray Charles and Metropolis might be good tags to add, unless you want the dupe police on your case. AND what an amazing scene this is. I got to see it in the theater, and boy howdy.

Dib - 2008-12-23 I have to confess this is the one anime I've ever seen that I liked, and I'm otherwise vehemently opposed to the genre. There's just no getting around the fact that this is a testament to some amazing animation and drawing, even if it probably meant locking up one hundred autistics in a room for two straight years to produce it. The production values here cannot be overstated to every last detail. And the character cells create an interesting contrast, in that they seem reminiscent of anime when it might have been considered original and with merit. Before it became pop and cliche and spawned an entire culture.
The problem with 99% of anime is that it's all cookie cutter and the sole distinguishing feature of characters is their hair color and whether they wear glasses. And it primarily utilizes specific themes that only ever appealed to a minor niche of japanese fanatics. The kind that would wallpaper their bedroom with hentai women printouts.
I would argue for Metropolis as the high point on the curve, by several orders of magnitude. There's minimal japanese gayness pervading it all: no rule 34 inducing schoolgirl uniforms, nobody pilots a mech, the protagonist doesn't have a talking winged cat for a sidekick. No fight scenes with power levels in excess of 9,000--no elements of Dragonball Z to be found anywhere at all, and the story is at least coherent.
And then there's this climatic scene--now spoiled for you all--which is a decent representation of the directing skills this movie displays. The falling rubble around them, in a sort of dream like state, with a lot of attention to colors and atmosphere. Plus, Ray Charles. I caught this by accident on a free showing of HBO or Starz (or one of those pay channels) and definitely recommend checking it out.

I would like it if the actual anime was titled:
Metropolis (the anime, not the silent film)

Hey, you know what movie I like?
Doctor Strangelove.

The funny thing about Poetv is that despite our anti-anime stance, Anime compromises about 65% of the content that gets uploaded here. And before you all go OMG ITS PROLLY CAMINANTE, HEY CAMINANTE HOW MANY LOLIS HAVE YOU RAEPED TODEYH? Most of those submits are tagged with "Anime that doesnt suck."
|
Dib - 2008-12-23 I come here pretty regularly, and can't recall seeing much anime here. Blog videos of trainwreck personalities, college guys injuring themselves, cats, a few staples like Zero Punctuation and Target Women, general politics, and miscellaneous videos of higher interest like bizarre porn with the nudity cut out.

King of Balls - 2008-12-23 Yeah. I don't think that's an accurate statistic.

robotkarateman - 2008-12-23
99% of anime "movies" suck balls. It's a fact.
"Metropolis", however, was part of the 1%.
