Corman's Inferno - 2008-12-31

I wish someone had compiled a list of all of Trio's original documentaries. Another good one focused on Shockwave hiring Matt Stone and Trey Parker during the first internet boom and telling them to do whatever they wanted, uncensored and uncut. The results were so horrifying that Shockwave killed the project after two episodes.

Like a more tragic version of the 'Brazil' saga, except Cimino did the butchering himself in the end...

Busby Berkeley - 2008-12-29

It's the 'Adventures of Baron Munchausen' story, actually. Everyone was so scared of Gilliam's antics & awed by 'Brazil' that they let him break the bank on his next film -- just like Cimino after 'The Deer Hunter'.

Everyone should watch 'Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession' -- a documentary on the late '70s-early '80s local-to-L.A. pay-cable channel that showed the uncut version of 'Heaven's Gate' for the first time & invented the home-video concept of the 'Director's Cut'.

I was just about to submit this, but I'm five years too late. Heaven's Gate is now part of the Criterion Collection, and people are talking about it like it was some kind of Masterpiece. I didn't like when I saw the complete film in 1988, but i never was a fan of four hour Westerns. One thing i would very much like to see is a documentary about the historical events that Heaven's gate inspired.

Here's what i think: the film that changed Hollywood wasn't Heaven's Gate. It was STAR WARS, or as the kids call it, "Episode 4: A NEW HOPE". What Kristofferson said about the money using Heaven Gate to s control is probably true, but STAR WARS was the motivation. Thirty-five years later, and we've got a crazy glut of comic book sci-fi action movies every summer. And remakes. And sequels. Because they're not seen as a risk.

JJ Abrams is going to direct Star Wars VII. You knew there was going to be a Star Wars Seven.
