I would say the last part seals the absurdity of his plot:

It's great that they're looking out for Obama and all, but there's a difference between somebody saying something on a chat, and somebody with access to weapons and has formulated an actual plan. Something with time, place, access, etc. and not based on "maybe Godzilla will distract the police while I carry out the hit"

Five years in jail is a little excessive for sprouting this bullshit. It really isn't like he is part of a terrorist sleeper cell or anything like that.

Not that I justify it, but using this guy as an example to scare away bullshit would-be Obama assassins helps the secret service by narrowing down the list of potential dangers. A deterrent.
