Well, he's not necessarily a homosexual. He's definitely not fully hetero either, but that's not really important to me.
It just made an impression on me to see a man who once came touted his views with such pompous self-righteousness brought down to a place of humility where he can see that what he was once so certain about just might not be true, and that he himself is more than a bit "confused".

Well, no, I understand that there is a pretty good chance that his remorse is insincere.
But, see, with those hypothetical bridges of yours, my cynicism would indeed serve me well... since it could very well prevent me from wasting my money on damaged or possibly non-existent bridges.
But with Mr. Haggard, I have nothing to lose by taking his remorse at face value. And for me, that interpretation is more pleasing than "he's trying to save face".
I think the truth lies somewhere in between, to be honest.
