Corman's Inferno - 2009-02-26

Stars for the ominous black clouds spilling out of the family's house at the end.

Stog - 2009-02-26

Turn your house into a Genuine Coketown Residence!

Tstyle - 2009-02-26

I hereby will be the first to stop heating my house and showers until we find an appropriate replacement.

wait, no I won't.

dueserpenti - 2009-02-26

What's your point?

RockBolt - 2009-02-26

BAN MINING! Let the bastards freeze in the dark

Smellvin - 2009-02-26

Fear not filthy hippies, for coal's days of being an economical source of energy draw nigh: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_coal

kelpfoot - 2009-02-26

...in 30 to 200 years, depending on whose estimate you use. Meanwhile, we're burning more coal than ever. (Also coal may continue to be viable for quite some even after peak coal, just so long as it's still economical compared to other sources.)

Smellvin, perhaps you didn't know, but there's a fucking LOT of coal on Earth, and the mere act of burning most of it will probably fuck things up royally.

Smellvin - 2009-02-27

I just read the article I had posted and it didn't mention that the BTU's we're getting out of coal has already peaked. We're digging up more, but it's of a crappier quality.

Cena_mark - 2009-02-26

Liberal propaganda. Clean coal is clean, because the particulate pollution it gives is greatly reduced. The main problem libs have with clean coal is that it gives off CO2 and they consider it to be a pollutant, even though it is non toxic.

kelpfoot - 2009-02-26

"Clean coal" produces less particulate matter* but also more highly toxic slurry that we get to store above ground. Considering that all it does is substitute one disgusting unsolvable mess with another, I don't see how that counts as "clean."

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/feb2009/tvad-f20.shtml

HI CENA!

kelpfoot - 2009-02-26

(*There is still plenty enough particulate matter that, when clean coal is used on a US-scale, it still causes several thousand excess deaths due to respiratory illness every year.)

Wytze! - 2009-02-26

You're just jealous Cena, 'cause all the cool directors are Liberals. All the Conservative directors suck balls.

RockBolt - 2009-02-26

Uuh, the fly ash impoundments that gave way have nothing to do with 'clean coal' technologies, which is just a term designated by the DOE that describes types of carbon capture, gasification (extraction of hydrogen) and various other implementations of coal for energy other than direct combustion in power plants (coal to diesel, hydrogen fuel cells etc), also designs for more efficient turbines and cycles in power plants. I'm lazy, here-

http://www.poe-news.com/forums/sp.php?fi=ELECT04&ti=1001809625 &pi=1001809794
(delete any spaces that show up in the link)

"Clean coal' is not a type of special coal, and it is not just one type of practice, its just a buzzword for research into these new technologies, none of which are commercial at this point, but have promise.

Those impoundments that failed are made up of the solids that are left over from traditional coal combustion, like the ash from burnt wood. Its as old and traditional as it gets.

The bottom line is, coal as we've utilized it is shit, but it can be used in a lot of ways that we are only beginning to explore that can be very efficient and low pollution. And until solar or wind or whatever can fill in for over 50% the US's energy needs in a cost effective way, coal and what we can derive from it shorter term with these cleaner technologies are what we have in the mean time, and these ads miss the point of that, esp when the only other alternative is turning off the lights

And go fuck yourself cena

SolRo - 2009-02-26

The point is that right now solar power is even more real and established than "clean coal"

RockBolt - 2009-02-27

But solar can't provide 2 trillion kilowatt hours of power per year just yet

kelpfoot - 2009-02-27

People forget about it now, but the phrase "clean coal" was originally used to describe fly ash impoundment.

Oh, and Integral Fast Reactor FTW.

dead_cat - 2009-02-27

It's so nontoxic, in fact, that I will pay you 20 dollars and a box of Mallomars if you will go scuba diving with nothing but pure CO2 tanks.

KnowFuture - 2009-02-27

Way to politicize whether or not a substance is poisonous you fucking tool.

Syd Midnight - 2009-02-27

Concentrated sewer gas is toxic, sure, but my farts are clean, because particulate matter is reduced. How about a SCUBA TANK FILLED WITH FARTS

Plaid Vlad - 2009-02-26

Reality has a liberal bias.

Cena_mark - 2009-02-26

Reality, the group that made this ad have a liberal bias. Reality as in Reality has no bias.
I can't believe you guys swallow such blatant propaganda. You guys need weigh the evidence and you'll see that global warming is a lie.

Helena Handbasket - 2009-02-26

HI CENA!

allcaps - 2009-02-27

I'm a big fan of this guy's work.

dead_cat - 2009-02-27

I live a lot closer to the heart of Coal Country than you do, Cena Mark, and it's a lot easier to see a lot of the costs (and benefits) of current coal policies and technology. But hey, clearly I've just been brainwashed by the liberal bias of my five senses.

KnowFuture - 2009-02-27

Deze nuts have a liberal bias

biclops - 2009-02-26

Hey, nice video fagtown

Wytze! - 2009-02-27

Eat my shit, queersborough!

RomancingTrain - 2009-02-27

Ed Begley Jr is awesome, I don't even care that he has opinions.

Herr Matthias - 2009-02-27

For some reason I find the buzzing noise at the end of these ads disturbing as hell.

KnowFuture - 2009-03-01

Seriously though, whoever suggested coal, clean or otherwise, as an alternative energy source to oil really really needs to be smacked upside the motherfuckin' head.
