Er...I'm not a scientist or anything, but I think those Appalachian hills might be a little older than that.

baleen - 2009-03-20

No, God created them 300 yrs ago for us.

Lauritz Melchior - 2009-03-20

Thanks. I really want to see the whole thing.

This is a pretty awesome special, I watched it when it was on TV, but damned if I couldnt make it more than 40 minutes in before I needed a break.

Enjoy - 2009-03-20

As good as this special was, I won't be back to read the comments here. I can't bare to to read what the "compassionate liberals" have to say about these poor people. By "say" I mean hate them for being poor.

baleen - 2009-03-20

I know this is just a stupid trolling on your part, and I find it particularly funny that you are now saying you won't check the comments, because you never check the comments after you leave a comment like this, ever.

But really, Pete Seeger? Phil Ochs? Woody Guthrie? These guys helped unionize coal miners and bring a higher quality of life to these communities, at least for a while.
I dearly hope they continue getting their welfare checks, whereas you would probably have them sell their children into sexual slavery rather than live off your tax dollars.

B. Weed - 2009-03-20

Forgot to log in as Cena_mark, did you?

Bort - 2010-12-22

Yes, we hate them so much that we want public policy that will improve their quality of life, and are willing to fund it with our tax dollars.

Cleaner82 - 2009-03-20

Sharp kid. He knows his shitty family issues are what makes him a good player -- life is funny that way.

Cena_mark - 2009-03-20

The people of the Appalachians are proud people who don't need patronizing from the likes of Dike ann Sawyer.
That kid is a real trooper. I hope he gets a big college scholarship.

Sudan no1 - 2009-03-21

Dike ann Sawyer

Scrotum H. Vainglorious - 2009-03-21

Of course you're going to praise your own ilk.

Cena_mark - 2009-03-21

They're not my ilk. Atlanta is not in Appalachia. Though I do not have much in common with these people (I'm educated, working, not on drugs) I can at least attest that we are proud to be Americans. I would rather chill with these people than San Francisco freaks any day.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-03-21

You should, though. Chillin with San Francisco is like chilling with the world. In Star Trek times.

As for this clip it's probably one of the most depressing I've seen on this site.

Rodents of Unusual Size - 2009-03-21

I was wrong, each clip gets progressively more depressing.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-03-21

Even Diane Sawyer's overwhelming repugnance does not detract from the overwhelming sadness of this story.

Although you will notice that 20/20 tried to do just that.

Cena_mark - 2009-03-21

It does suck how sadder each segment gets. The football star graduates and goes to college, but drops out in 8 weeks.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-03-21

One of the primary reasons I submitted this is that the boy's situation is very loosely analogous to mine. I come from a crappy, run-down industrial community within an even larger industrial community. Where I grew up is considered the shithole within the shithole. I am one of only two people from my primary school to get to university, and the only one to continue on to postgraduate level. If I moved back to where I grew up, I would be stabbed or shot in days.

http://www.halebank.com if you want to see it for yourselves.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-03-21

oops, forgot to say 'if there's anything that ever motivates you to work hard, it's knowing that if you don't you're going to have to go back home to that'.

James Woods - 2009-03-21

Good on you man. My stars are for you.

Hooper_X - 2009-03-21

Oh my god, man. I would run run run and leave that shit as far behind as humanly possible.

Wow.

The problem is, there are a lot of otherwise bright kids who just really don't know anything other than this. They could hack it in the outside world if they had any degree of preparation or awareness of what life is like outside whatever sorry-ass town they came from. They have no impetus to get out, because the outside world is full of "san francisco freaks."

I don't know, man. I got the fuck out of the small town I came from, and it was by all accounts a decent little town. But it was no fucking place for a goddamned pomo hipster douchebag artfag asshole.

Mike Tyson?! - 2009-03-21

So, that kid drops out of college and moves back... To the mountains? Fuck.

Camonk - 2009-03-21

Every like twenty years somebody goes, HOLY SHIT THE SOUTH/APPALACHIA IS POOR
And then they forget again, and these people go on, and nothing is ever really done.

Paracelsus - 2009-08-29

Anthropology.
