Technically gays do have equal rights as everyone else. The law doesn't say gay people can't marry, they just can't marry members of the same sex in most states. Both heterosexuals and homosexuals can marry a member of the opposite sex, just as both parties may not marry a member of the same sex.

Keep in mind, the old "Reefer Madness" and "Red Storm Rising" movies seems funny now. But the people behind this ad saw those films, and believed them. They sincerely believe that anyone who threatens "the American way of life" (as defined by those people at that point in time) also threatens their lives and freedom.
