How could they talk to him with the windows up?

glasseye - 2009-04-20

In these parts we call it "shouting."

BillFisto - 2009-04-20

WILL NOBODY LET THIS POOR MAN GO ON HIS WAY?

futurebot - 2009-04-20

Um, I don't think one has to endorse this guy's bigotry, fundamentalism, or tenuous references to Orwell to agree that the police appear to have acted with disproportionate force, quite possibly in violation of the guy's civil liberties.

I'm not sure if this authorizes a search, but it definitely says the border patrol can stop you for "brief questioning" without any suspicion of a crime.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-04-20

If this had happened to someone else during the Bush years, this guy would have been tripping over himself to defend the cops.

Nice Sam Kinison impersonation at 5:54 and 5:57, though.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-04-20

If this is true, regardless of his beliefs, this man deserves a personal apology from everyone involved and their immediate dismissals.

Robin Kestrel - 2009-04-20

Wait, because we don't like the guy's politics, the police were totally justified in the level of force used?

My heartburn with this guy is that he's muddying the water by conflating his refusal to consent to a search with his refusal to exit the vehicle. This could have been an excellent case to get conservatives to rethink the importance of Fourth Amendment rights, but now it will be drowned out by the argument that the guy was on a passive-resistance crusade against checkpoints and deliberately escalated the situation.

Charles - 2009-10-07

Yes, obviously excessive force was used and regardless of his beliefs he should not have experienced this, but I think it takes an especially retarded, anally-retentive douche-nozzle to deliberately escalate a disagreement with a bunch of authority figures toting batons, tasers, and german shepherds. This situation could have been avoided by just complying with the request to step out of the car. Then if they still felt it was necessary, they could search his trunk and find the fucking tools and send him on his fucking way without any more bother. 5 minutes at MOST. The officers are not justified at all in this, but FUCK, man. You don't have anything to fucking hide, apparently, so just swallow your fucking pride, and then you can still complain all you want about how unjust it all was and how they were abusing their authority, and then maybe try and change the system for the better in a smarter, more acceptable way.

FABIO - 2012-12-09

Did you seriously pull out the nothing to hide argument?

memedumpster - 2009-04-20

1984 is about fifteen hundred years too progressive for Christianity, yet even still, I would rather be a fundamentalist christian all day long than a fucking cop, whose behavior became obsolete when we harnessed fire.

These kinds of videos make me sad, because if his story had suddenly doevetailed into "... and THEN, I pulled out my .45 and shot the FIRST officer in the face, THROUGH the window..." I wouldn't have felt bad about it, at first.

Barbarism is like a contagion and I hate that shit. Revenge just seems like a reflective mechanism for hate. Every intellectual fiber of my being is saying that killing border cops like that is WRONG, but I have very few emotions that agree. This is why education is important, because we're fucking animals otherwise.

Witty_Pop_Culture_Reference - 2009-04-22

I tend to believe the opposite; that human beings by and large are good and friendly and co-operative, but sadly corrupted by authority and being forced to live in an unnatural mass existence that goes against our evolution. Like pigs being jammed into factory farms where they eventually snap and start tearing off other pigs' tails.

Alter the unnatural state we live in, remove the despotism of resource scarcity, and suddenly authority is unneeded and laughable, primitve at best.

Xenocide - 2009-04-20

On the one hand, if this guy's story is completely accurate, then he's been treated unfairly.

On the other hand, someone who rants and screams at a webcam is, at best, a bit of an unreliable narrator.

Cleaner82 - 2009-04-20

Troubling that the border patrol is kind of waltzing around the Constitution in this way. If his anecdote is totally accurate it was not right at all. The important detail was the drug-sniffing dog smelling make-believe drugs. Now if the patrol had some actual, legally valid basis for demanding he exit his vehicle that's another beast, when the cops have to force you out of your vehicle you done gonna be hurt.

But what the fucking hell is funny about this? Yeah, no shit he's upset. The shoe is on the other foot for a few months and suddenly it's okay? No, fuck you and your disposable morality.

Hooker - 2009-04-20

The part in 1984 where Winston Smith refuses to comply with a border patrol agent, gets beaten up, and then runs home to whine in a ten minute vlog isn't one of the better parts of the novel.

BillFisto - 2009-04-21

Don't be silly, Hooker. We've always been at war with the border patrol agents.

notascientist - 2010-10-26

The checkpoint isn't the location to fight tyranny when you live in a functioning state, where your free speech and rights and your right to representation and legal recourse are basically intact. Had I been in his position, and had I wanted to get into the issue, I would have told the officers that I refuse to provide consent for searching my vehicle, but that I will step out of the vehicle and not interfere with the search. I'd then take it up with my lawyer later.

Its true that the jackasses who did this are probably maladjusted dicks on a power trip, but they are also just functionaries, doing a shitty, tense and boring job, for probably shitty amounts of money. The beef isn't with these guys. The beef is with the law, and should be addressed at the level of the law.
