That is the weakest copout I've seen in awhile. But I will take the sum total of this hurfing and blurfing as the official retraction of the banana thing.

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-08

Let me see if I can follow the train of thought.

1) A coke can is specially designed for humans, and the functional nature of the object is proof that it had a designer.

2) A banana is also functional, implying that it too had a designer.

3) As it turns out, this designer is also man.

4) ???

5) GOD EXISTS.

StanleyPain - 2009-05-08

6) PROFIT!!

How many times can you misspell "atheist"?

Wytze! - 2009-05-08

Answer: 3

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-08

Oddly enough, his argument for the design functionality of a banana seems to equally apply to male masturbation.

So god "gave" man the knowledge on how to hybridize the banana? He apparently left out the bits about monocultures, which is why the banana we ate in the early part of the 20th century is now extinct. And as a capper, the Bible has some interesting things to say about genetics. You won't believe this, but if you put striped branches from almond and poplar trees where your goats and sheep breed, you'll get spotted and striped offspring.

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-05-08

Also, according to The Bible, God wasn't the one who gave man knowledge in the first place. That would be The Devil...Or a snake, it's a little vague on the etails

grimcity - 2009-05-08

Also, if two or more people agree on one thing, it'll be done by our father in Heaven, so let's all agree that I should get a shiny new Benz and a couple of Piaggio scooters, OK? Thanks!

Amen and two chicks.

Old_Zircon - 2010-09-22

I would like a vintage Piaggio Ape while we're at it.

Aubrey McFate - 2009-05-08

Ha ha, aliens! How absurd! Who would believe in such a thing!

StanleyPain - 2009-05-08

Hey there guy who's written 2 or 3 extensively researched books on why he doesn't believe in God, WHY DON'T YOU EXPLAIN WHY YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD???

fermun - 2009-05-08

I love how they use Dawkins out of context to make it seem like he believes in evolution.

"Toward the end of his interview with me, Stein asked whether I could think of any circumstances whatsoever under which intelligent design might have occurred. It's the kind of challenge I relish, and I set myself the task of imagining the most plausible scenario I could. I wanted to give ID its best shot, however poor that best shot might be."

fermun - 2009-05-08

I meant to say intelligent design instead of evolution.

Chancho - 2009-05-08

I didn't even bother looking it up. I just assumed Ben Stein was full of shit.

StanleyPain - 2009-05-08

Almost all of the interviews with evolution supporters in that movie were somehow edited or tinkered with to make them either look like idiots or change their context. In order to get the interviews, Ben Stein and the rest of the filmmakers lied to them and misrepresented what the film was and what the interviews were being used for.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-08

Ben Stein worked for the Nixon administration. Why anyone has continued to listen to the man expecting any kind of veracity is beyond me.

Old_Zircon - 2010-09-22

But he was in Ferris Bueller's Day Off!

thebaronsdoctor - 2009-05-08

Screw Richard Dawkins, I want to see Comfort debate potholer54!

Seriously though, I really don't get why people are so snarky about Dawkins comments on Expelled, I think it obvious he was saying that alien intervention is the only possible way intelligent design could have actually happened, not that he thought aliens actually magically designed us.

Also: is it just me or does the phrase "Stamp Out Atheism" seem more than a little...ominous

fermun - 2009-05-08

I only mentioned them using Dawkins out of context because Ray Comfort explicitly mentioned how his banana argument was used out of context by "the athiests." I thought it was a little bit odd that he'd whine about using his banana argument without the preceding soda can scenario and then immediately use Dawkins' thought experiment without the preceding "is there any possible way that ID could be real" question.

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-08

Come on. Really? It's not odd at all. It's retaliation. Maybe you're just blinded by the decidedly un-Jesus nature of the act.

erection reset by queer - 2009-05-08

I like how this makes Dawkins look pretty good. Probably not the intended effect.

Cena_mark - 2009-05-08

Why would the same god make pineapples so inconvenient?

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-08

... that is a damn good point.

And they're easily twice as delicious. What a jerk.

mashedtater - 2009-05-08

we also deserve an explanation for the mango

minimalist - 2009-05-08

fucking coconuts man, what the hell

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-08

Brazil nuts. I bloody my fingernails and bend half a dozen nut-picks every year on those things. Clearly, this is the work of a vengeful God.

citrusmirakel - 2009-05-11

HEY!

You accidentally used your troll account to post a non-troll comment. Keep better track of these things.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-05-08

what about sago, or cassava? Is it intelligent to design a plant with a huge amount of starch and food value only to make it toxic unless REALLY CAREFULLY TREATED?

This feels like 'People I want to punch really hard in the face' week.

Spastic Avenger - 2009-05-08

I totally missed the

BANANAMAN vs. ALIENMAN

bit the first time round.

Xenocide - 2009-05-08

DOGS WERE DESIGNED TO FIT IN RAY COMFORT'S CAR.

CATS WERE DESIGNED TO FIT IN RAY COMFORT'S WIFE.

Wytze! - 2009-05-08

Ewww. What a slut.

8bitwintermute - 2009-05-09

You can't debate with creationists at all, it's just not possible. If you ask them a question they can't answer, it's the majesty and wonder of god which somehow proves them right.

what I don't get is why creationists are so angry about the fact that not everyone believes the same thing they do, and why they bust out ill-prepared examples like "MY BANANA WAS DESIGNED BY GOD" and expect to be taken seriously.

Nyms Lives! - 2012-04-19

Because if someone doesn't believe the same thing they do, there's a possibility that they're wrong, and they've invested too much of their life and personal image into it to be able to accept the fact that there's any possibility that they might be wrong.

The God of Biscuits - 2009-07-12

The subtle sexism is what gets me.
