You know what's awesome? We got a fucking black PRESIDENT before we got a black Disney Princess™.

Even then, it is apparently chock full of Hilarious Racial Stereotypes. We've got a Savage Jungle Witch Doctor, there appears to be a Mammy at the end, and there's ACTUAL SHUCKING AND JIVING. BY ACTUAL MAGICAL NEGROES.

On the other hand, it appears that it's also Disney's first interracial relationship (Beauty and the Beast notwithstanding) so that's something.

I hope this leads to a hilarious situation where there's two protests going on at once - one bunch decrying the racist portrayals of blacks, the other decrying the film's promotion of miscegenation.

(plus, there appear to be the usual furry-ish elements)

Xenocide - 2009-05-13

Yeah, this entire controversy has been going on for a year and a half now. The movie has gone through dozens of rewrites and a title change to try and please everyone, but it's all hopeless because people are going to take one look at it, go "What sport! A cartoon with black people!" and will not stop looking until they find something to be outraged about, no matter how small or idiotic.

Oh, gee, there's a voodoo priest? In a movie set in a magical fairy tale New Orleans? CRAZY RACIST!

The characters dance and sing...IN A MUSICAL? THIS IS WORSE THAN A BUCKET OF KLAN RALLIES!

Also it turns out there's alot of people with ebonic accents and all of THEM are black, too! And the black people are mostly poor! In the 1920's! In the south! EVEN HISTORY IS RACIST NOW!

Why can't all black people in movies be math genius CEO's who cure cancer while speaking perfect(ly white) english and teaching a little boy the magic of tolerence?

Camonk - 2009-05-13

They really can't win on the accents thing. Just ask Zora Neale Hurston.

spikestoyiu - 2009-05-13

To be fair, the original title of the movie was Dirty Nigger Princess.

imairlax - 2009-05-13

five for camonk's reference to a great work of literature being followed immediately by the phrase "dirty nigger princess".

also, that frog definitely softshoes at 1:00. feets be movin.

Cleaner82 - 2009-05-13

Honestly this looks fine to me.

I'm sort of excited to see a cartoon being actually animated again. It could use a Morgan Freeman character to teach the little boy the magic of tolerance though. Wait, what little boy?

StanleyPain - 2009-05-13

Uh...before you get all "I'm such an enlightened anti-PC hipster" on everyone, you might want to check out the previous two or three trailers for this film. This one politely tones down all the "HELL NAW DAYYYYUUUMMMMM DAT SHO NUFF SUM CRAZY FROG BITCH!!" that was present there. This trailer makes the film seem far more level-headed and historic.....go back and watch the promotion for this film over the last 2 years or so.

They clearly are either changing the advertising or they actually altered the film.

Xenocide - 2009-05-13

Yeah, I saw the old teaser. In fact, I commented on it on this very website! Yes, this one, right here!

The retarded mosquito thing was stupid, and seems to have been almost totally axed from the film thanks to response to the teaser. That is a great thing. But that's not what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about the phenomenon of people rushing to be offended by trivial things like people dancing and singing or doing magic or having accents in a Disney movie.

It would be one thing if these elements had never appeared in a cartoon before, but since they've been in pretty much every cartoon this studio's ever made, you're left with the attitude that it's okay when white princesses and indians and arabs and talking lions and Tarzan and brave little toasters do it, but when blacks do the exact same thing, suddenly it's offensive.

Fuck that. I just don't want to see this film scrubbed of any charm or personality it might have by the outrage police.

mashedtater - 2009-05-13

on the furry thing:

i dont think they intend for it to be a creepy furry thing. most of the time it is the fact that when you are little, you believe shit that cannot talk can talk. rocks, birds, and toasters. it a magical childish quality that either goes away or is distorted into fur suits and despair.

you go with your bad self, Xenocide. i cant say it any better than you did.

Portaxx - 2009-05-13

Actually the retarded Cajun firefly is still in the film, he's just not in this trailer. And from what I heard, the test audiences loved the character, so I expect to see a lot more of him in the future. Which is a shame.

Hooker - 2009-05-13

Has Xenocide always been a racist?

MrBuddy - 2009-05-13

Five stars for Xenocide being right, five stars for Disney producing hand drawn animation (even if it's over exagerated) and as for you Hooker you can't post on Craigslist anymore.

Hooker - 2009-05-13

I don't even know what that means.

SharoKham - 2009-05-14

I was almost ready to give Xenocide the benefit of the doubt over getting too excited by every ultra-racist vintage cartoon that pops up on here but I was clearly being hasty.

MrBuddy - 2009-05-14

Explanation of my own joke failure: "erotic services" have been recently banned from Craigslist.

Chibisuke - 2009-05-13

The original trailer for this made it look like shit, but this actually makes it look decent. I don't know what to think now!

voodoo_pork - 2009-05-13

It will be decent shit.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-13

The montage of classic Disney movies ended with The Lion King.

Nikon - 2009-05-13

How did The Lion King make the cut?

Triggerbaby - 2009-05-13

It was their most profitable animated movie ever.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-13

Kimba, Simba, who really cares, right?

dementomstie - 2009-05-13

God damnit! I don't know how to feel about it. It looks amazingly beautiful and I'm a sucker for anything with Baron Samedi, but it's also recent Disney, which has brought us such hits as "Home on the Range" and "Treasure Planet".
All thoughts of racism aside this could very well be terrible.

I'd be more willing to play the racism card if I knew for a fact that this was incredibly racist. I just don't think that Oprah would be willing to be in a movie that was actually racist.

papa_november - 2009-05-13

I know! Let's resurrect the 2D department by making the exact same fucking movie that killed it in the first place!

They really learned nothing from Pixar, did they.

wtf japan - 2009-05-13

A Disney film without blatant racism is like peanut butter without jelly. Quit bitching and laissez le bon temps roulet!

mashedtater - 2009-05-20

lay around the good roulette wheel?
