voodoo_pork - 2009-05-19
This is probably the best animated comic adaptation I've ever seen. It's one of the few excellent non-music shows MTV has ever produced.

The VHS cut of this to a standalone rocks - it always sucked that some unknown reason kept this from an official release on DVD.

SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-19 @Sosage: Yeah, there was. I have a vague recollection that he was a bit-player from "The Savage Dragon" (also published by Image). I'm not sure what drove the decision to put him in there other than "hey, let's have a fight and maybe promote some other properties," but it was pretty unneeded.

Sam Keith rocks. I remember reading anything he worked on in the 90's and copying his drawings of Maxx and Wolverine.

Toenails - 2009-05-20 Survey: What did art did you copy and show off to your friends in school?

Witty_Pop_Culture_Reference - 2009-05-20 High School: Kid Eternity- three part graphic novel. My personal all time favorite. I preached that shit to the masses.

memedumpster - 2009-05-19
I would put this against anything made today.
|
badideasinaction - 2009-05-20 Yeah, same. I've got the VHS version and it's something I'm willing to show to friends without any protestations of "yeah, but for the time..." or stuff. It really does hold up.
|
HoboTech - 2009-05-19
I loved this series, but after picking up the comics, I kind of wish that they had ended where the MTV series did.
Now if only MTV had done Transmetropolitan as well...
|
Toenails - 2009-05-20 I see you also bought the series that delved into the futuristic world of 2005.
Yeah, that story was ass. Keith should have just stuck with the original Maxx.

Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-19
Once again, it wasn't anime, so I refused to watch it.
|
|
voodoo_pork - 2009-05-19 Someone Photoshop blue hair onto Maxx!
|
Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-19 How odd, that's exactly how I view people who don't like anime.
I'm talking to you, voodoo pork!
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-19 Anime has its moments, but as a whole (like most things), 90% of it is crap, but the fanbase won't admit it. I think this is a holdover from when the only anime to be had was via imports or duped tapes, and there's a fear that if any of its shortcomings are actually examined, it will somehow disappear from TV and Netflix overnight. Plus, as in the case of this little gem...
http://www.toplessrobot.com/2009/05/japan_slides_ever_further_ into_depravity.php
... a lot of it is insanity by way of sexual repression (or more so than usual). I could also add that most anime don't end decently because the creators got bored and left the project, or they weren't writing fast enough (the "Dragonball Z" effect) or never had an idea about where the plot was going beyond "hey, let's make this one guy part demon with a huge-ass sword and give him a chick with big tits that follows him around but they never get around to actually having something like an evolving relationship." Giant robots optional, toss in a few fights, sell it on J-List, profit.
|
Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-19 You know, we don't really need that explanation every single time someone brings up anime.
No, we really don't.
Also, the person who wrote the article you linked to is a pussy.
|
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-19 Actually, Nocturno, he's one of the people that actually enjoys anime (he disliked the adaptation of "Dragonball" into movie format, for example, and cited went on to wax nostalgic about the original).
I think he rightly is pointing out the ludicrous nature of putting on a "serious" anime for mainstream viewership involving, basically, breast-milk-powered ninjas. Any thought that this isn't an excuse to just show titties is laughable. Any thought that we're missing the "deep and spiritual message of Japanese culture" or what have you is grounds for the application of heavy meds and possible state monitoring.
|
Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-19 It's a safe bet that this anime is going to air at 1AM or a similarly ungodly hour, so that pretty much throws the 'mainstream' idea out the window. That's a moot point, anyway, since 'mainstream' is rapidly becoming a culturally outdated term.
I still maintain that the guy you linked to is a pussy, though. I'll fight him if I have to.
|
badideasinaction - 2009-05-19 I know it's a persona, but c'mon, I help run a freaking anime con and I admit that most of it is crap. The pacific ocean used to work really well as a crap filter. A little less so now that the feeding frenzy has taken place so they licensed everything, crap or not, but now that the market is imploding again maybe it'll get back that way again and the generic shit will stay in the margins.
90% of everything is crap, including anime. The Maxx was most definitely not one of those crappy thing.
|
Caminante Nocturno - 2009-05-19 Even shows that are not licensed, whether they deserve it or not, will be picked up by a fansubbing group or two. The crap filter is gone and it's never coming back. Not just for anime, but for everything everywhere.
To edge back on topic, maybe The Maxx was good, I don't know. It had the misfortune of coming out during my "Militant Anime Fan" days. It wasn't anime, so I wouldn't watch it, and I might even hate it if my mood was foul enough.
As a matter of fact, I'm starting to get flashbacks to those days.
This isn't anime, I should be one-starring it!

Camonk - 2009-05-19
This show blew my mind out when it was on, because I was expecting a mindless superhero show. That uh. That is not what I got.
|
SteamPoweredKleenex - 2009-05-19
I loved this exchange with Mr. Gone:
Julie: You, however, have a problem with women.
Mr. Gone: [scoff] How perceptive... did you figure that one out when I kidnapped you, or tied you up with leather straps? OF COURSE I'VE GOT A PROBLEM WITH WOMEN! EVERYONE has a problem with women!
The "you killed my hostage" bit was also great.

Teldin - 2009-05-19
The Maxx is easily one of the greatest things of all time. I think the whole series is still on here somewhere if it hasn't been removed by now.
|
The Mothership - 2009-05-19
This has been up for less than 12 hours, but already look at the comments. Truly a testament to the work. However, as a fan of the comic, the cartoon was not at all what I expected.
Also, surely, SURELY.... we can make some kind of 'Mr Gone' tag; TFL Bill, perhaps?
|
Merzbau - 2009-05-19
Adding to the chorus. This show was incredible.

erratic - 2009-05-19
One of closest friends was an animator on the Maxx. I was over at his house one day and saw is VHS tapes of it an he was all "oh, that old show..I almost forgot about it."
|
Aelric - 2009-05-19 One of your closest friend has a coupon for one free blowjob by me. Anyone involved with bringing this to me in an oddities marathon one night when I was 14 and sleep deprived, making me think the next day that I dreamed it deserves a little oral sex.

One of the few VHS tapes I still have around.

Leviathant - 2009-05-21
I had a crappy DVD that I grabbed a couple of years ago, but recently checked Demonoid to see if anything else had been put out there - and sure enough, someone did high quality 2xDVD release ripped from "SP VHS Hi-fi stereo tapes of the show"
To further quote from the description on Demonoid:
- Sourced from my own first generation SP hi-fi stereo VHS recordings, time-base corrected and transferred via Firewire to DV-AVI.
- All editing done in DV-AVI, final output converted to 8000kbps (VBR) 720x480 (NTSC) MPEG-2 for DVD (slightly higher bitrate for this volume, since there were slightly fewer episodes for this last part of the series).
- Interlaced lower-field first, matching original source material.
- I should mention, there are some very MINOR glitches at a few of the commercial breaks because I cut the ads out as I was taping for the last half (Stupid, yes, but how was I supposed to know ten plus years ago that I'd be re-editing this whole thing DIGITALLY one day??). Sorry about that, I cleaned them up as much as I could. That said, the glitches in question ARE quite minor (I'm far more of a perfectionist than most people I know...), and otherwise the quality is identical to the first volume.
It's goooooood.
